Marriage, Children, and Relationships in Stardew Valley

Hello, friends! Today, let’s discuss the topic of marriage and having children in Stardew Valley. In the game, there are 12 marriageable characters, with six males (Alex, Elliott, Harvey, Sam, Sebastian, and Shane) and six females (Abigail, Emily, Haley, Leah, Maru, and Penny). The game supports same-sex marriages, and Krobus can become a roommate, but there won’t be a wedding or children.

  1. Building Relationships

Non-playable characters (NPCs) cannot be married. To marry Mayor Lewis, you’ll need to use a mod. To get married, you must first build a good relationship with your chosen partner. Relationship status is displayed as hearts, which can be increased by talking, giving gifts, watching movies, and more.

  1. Becoming Boyfriend/Girlfriend

When a marriageable character reaches eight hearts, Pierre will send a letter saying that you can buy a bouquet. Giving a bouquet to an eight-heart character makes them your boyfriend/girlfriend, and their heart limit increases to ten. You can have multiple boyfriends/girlfriends and even marry multiple villagers. To break up, place the bouquet in a furnace to create a Wilted Bouquet and give it to your partner.

  1. Preparing for Marriage

After reaching ten hearts, Mayor Lewis will send a letter reminding you to buy a Mermaid’s Pendant. On a rainy day, visit the beach to the right of the broken bridge, where an old mariner will sell the pendant. You must upgrade your farmhouse at least once for him to sell it to you. Give the pendant to your chosen partner, and the wedding will occur in three days.

  1. The Wedding Day

The wedding will always be sunny, even if it was supposed to rain. Mayor Lewis will officiate the ceremony, and many villagers will attend, except those with unresolved memories from previous marriages. After the wedding, your spouse will move in with you, bringing their unique room design. Your spouse may occasionally help with chores, but don’t rely on them too much.

Your spouse’s heart limit increases to 14, and you can give daily gifts, but their affection can drop quickly if ignored. At 12.5 hearts, your spouse will give you a Stardrop. Each marriageable character has a unique 14-heart event. Experiencing all events can be challenging.

Seven days after marriage, there’s a chance to have children, but your spouse must have at least ten hearts, and your house must be upgraded again to include a nursery. Removing the crib from the house prevents having children. With a 5% chance each night, opposite-sex partners will ask if you want to have a child, while same-sex partners will ask about adoption.

  1. Children

Children take 14 days to be born and can eventually run around but won’t help with chores. You can have up to two children. The first child’s gender is random, and the second child will have the opposite gender. You can interact with your children and put hats on them, but their affection doesn’t count towards the 100% completion.

  1. Divorce

To divorce, visit Mayor Lewis’s house and pay 50,000 gold. You can change your mind on the same day. After divorce, your ex-spouse’s hearts will reset to zero, and their title will change to ex-husband or ex-wife. You cannot give gifts or increase their affection anymore. They will move out, but your children will stay with you.

  1. Erasing Memories

To erase your ex-spouse’s memories, visit the Witch’s Hut and use the Shrine.
