Exp. Share Location

Trade the Red Scale to Mr. Pokemon on Route 30

In Pokemon Crystal, Exp. Share comes from Mr. Pokemon after you bring him the Red Scale from the Lake of Rage red Gyarados. It is a held item, not a modern party-wide Exp. Share toggle.

Pokemon Crystal red Gyarados Exp. Share prerequisite
Red Gyarados gives the Red Scale after the Lake of Rage battle.

Fast Answer

Red Scale -> Mr. Pokemon -> Exp. Share

If the Red Scale is already in your bag, go to Cherrygrove City, walk north through Route 30, enter Mr. Pokemon's house near the top of the route, and accept his trade. If you do not have the Red Scale yet, clear the Lake of Rage red Gyarados event first.

Gen II Mechanics

Held item, not whole-party sharing

Give Exp. Share to one Pokemon. If it is not fainted, it receives a share of battle experience even when it did not enter the fight. Pokemon that actually battled still receive their share, so the item is best for low-risk background training.

  • It does not turn on for every party member.
  • It is slower when several Pokemon are splitting the same battle reward.
  • It is most useful for weak catches, baby Pokemon, and late-game team projects.

Version Scope

Use these steps for vanilla Pokemon Crystal

This page covers Pokemon Crystal for Game Boy Color and the 3DS Virtual Console release. ROM hacks, randomizers, and later remakes can move Exp. Share or change its effect, so use their own documentation when their item list differs from vanilla Crystal.
