First Visit

Kabuto

Use this as your starter room. No HM is required, and solving it releases Unown A through K in the inner chamber.

  • Clue: ESCAPE
  • Action: Use Escape Rope near the rear wall.
  • Rewards: Berry, PSNCureBerry, Heal Powder, EnergyPowder.

Surf Return

Aerodactyl

Come back after Surf to cross the water south of the main ruins. Solving it adds Unown S through W.

  • Clue: LIGHT
  • Action: Use Flash near the rear wall.
  • Rewards: Gold Berry, Moon Stone, Heal Powder, Energy Root.

Union Cave

Omanyte

Use the deeper Union Cave path with Surf and Strength. Solving it adds Unown L through R.

  • Clue: WATER
  • Action: Carry a Water Stone and check the wall.
  • Rewards: MysteryBerry, Mystic Water, Stardust, Star Piece.

Union Cave

Ho-Oh

The picture room is reached from Union Cave, while the secret room waits until Ho-Oh can lead your party. Solving it adds Unown X through Z.

  • Clue: HO-OH
  • Action: Put Ho-Oh in party slot one and check the wall.
  • Rewards: Gold Berry, MysteryBerry, Revival Herb, Charcoal.

Route Order

Clean completion route

  1. Early Johto: clear Kabuto when you first reach the ruins.
  2. After Surf: return for Aerodactyl and the Flash secret room.
  3. After Strength: enter Union Cave for Omanyte and its Water Stone room.
  4. Late or postgame: finish Ho-Oh's secret after Ho-Oh can lead the party.

When the room does not match

Wrong puzzle roomMatch by picture name first, then entrance. Union Cave rooms are the most common mix-up.
No secret opensSolve the picture, re-enter the chamber, stand by the rear wall, then use the listed item, move, or party setup.
Missing lettersCrystal uses four letter groups. Remake guides and ROM hacks can list different behavior.
Main story blockedThe ruins are optional. Continue the Johto route if you only want progression.
