How To Find And Use Journal Scraps In Stardew Valley

Journal Scraps are 11 numbered notes found on Ginger Island. They appear in order, do not require the Magnifying Glass, and are read by selecting the scrap and using it from the inventory.

Journal Scraps begin dropping only after Ginger Island is available.

Unlock Ginger Island in the correct order

  1. Complete the Community Center path or the Joja development path.
  2. Receive Willy’s invitation to visit the back room of the Fish Shop.
  3. Repair the boat with 200 Hardwood, 5 Battery Packs, and 5 Iridium Bars.
  4. Buy a boat ticket and travel to Ginger Island.

You cannot repair Willy’s boat and then complete the Community Center afterward; completion of the Community Center or Joja route is the prerequisite that opens the boat sequence.

Ways to find Journal Scraps

While on Ginger Island, scraps can appear through normal exploration activities such as:

  • defeating monsters;
  • breaking rocks and resource nodes;
  • cutting weeds and clearing debris;
  • chopping trees;
  • digging Artifact Spots;
  • fishing in island waters.

Later-numbered scraps cannot be found before earlier ones. Read each new scrap so the next number can enter the drop pool.

What the scraps are for

The notes record island history and give clues for buried treasure, Golden Walnut locations, fishing or farming secrets, and island puzzles. When a scrap shows a map, match landmarks and count tiles from a fixed feature before digging with the Hoe.

Golden Walnuts are unlock resources

Golden Walnuts are primarily given to island parrots to open areas and services such as access routes, the Island Farmhouse, bridges, shortcuts, and the Resort. Finding 100 Golden Walnuts unlocks Qi’s Walnut Room.

The rare-item shop inside that room uses Qi Gems, not Golden Walnuts. The local shop data identifies the Qi Gem Shop as a separate currency shop. Do not describe walnuts as a general item-trading currency.

Efficient collection tips

  • Combine tasks: mine in the Volcano, clear weeds, fish, and maintain the Island Farm instead of grinding only one source.
  • Keep a Hoe, Pickaxe, Axe, weapon, and fishing rod available so a clue can be acted on immediately.
  • Check the Collections menu before repeating a clue; a consumed scrap remains recorded there.
  • If no scraps drop, confirm you are on Ginger Island and have read the previous numbered scrap.
