Why Are My Chickens Grumpy In Stardew Valley: Tips To Keep Them Happy

Grumpy chickens usually point to feed, petting, weather, or winter warmth—not water or visible predators. Chickens can produce better eggs as friendship and mood improve, so use the checklist below before assuming the coop is bugged.

Chicken Care Checklist

• Feed every adult chicken once per day. Put one Hay per animal on the feeding bench, unless the chicken ate outdoor Grass. A Deluxe Coop fills its bench automatically from a Silo, but it does not create Hay.
• Pet each chicken daily. Interact once until the heart appears. Repeatedly clicking to open the status panel is not extra petting.
• Use a Heater in winter. Place it inside the Coop. Animals stay indoors during winter, rain, and storms, so the feeding bench must be stocked.
• Let chickens graze on suitable days. Open the animal door so they can reach Grass outdoors. Grazing provides a strong mood benefit.
• Do not shut the door while a chicken is still outside. Animals normally return in the evening; wait until they are inside before closing it.

There is no farm-animal water mechanic. Chickens have no drink meter, trough, or daily watering requirement.

Hay and Grass

A Silo stores Hay cut from Grass with a scythe. Robin builds one for 100g, 100 Stone, 10 Clay, and 5 Copper Bars. Hay can also be bought from Marnie. In a basic or Big Coop, manually move Hay from the hopper to the bench; in a Deluxe Coop, the auto-feeder does that step when the Silo contains Hay.

On dry spring, summer, and fall days, chickens prefer outdoor Grass when they can reach it. Keep enough Grass near the Coop or provide Hay indoors as the fallback.

What Predators Actually Mean

There are no wolves, foxes, or other persistent farm predators for the player to find and eliminate. The game has a rare overnight wild-animal event: it can remove an animal that belongs to a Coop or Barn but was left outside while that building’s animal door was closed. It is an overnight condition, not a visible threat roaming the farm.

Fast Troubleshooting

• If the bench is empty, add one Hay per chicken.
• If it is winter, confirm a Heater is inside and the Silo is stocked.
• If it is raining, do not expect outdoor grazing; feed Hay.
• Pet the chicken and inspect its status message.
• Confirm the Coop door was not closed before all animals returned.
