Rank 1 for ease
Totodile
Best for a low-friction campaign. Croconaw becomes Feraligatr at level 30, Surf gives reliable travel damage, and Ice Punch keeps the line useful against Dragonair, Dragonite, and late Flying threats.
Rank 2 for ease
Cyndaquil
Best when you want the Fire slot solved by your starter. Quilava comes early at level 14, Typhlosion has 109 Special Attack, and ThunderPunch can patch some Water and Flying matchups.
Rank 3 for ease
Chikorita
Best for players who enjoy building around a support anchor. Razor Leaf at level 8, Reflect at level 12, PoisonPowder at level 15, and Synthesis later make it steady, but the matchup chart is rough.

Starter FAQ
Who is easiest for beginners?
Totodile. It asks the least from your route knowledge and gives clear move choices through the late game.
Who makes the best no-trade team?
Cyndaquil often makes team building cleaner because Fire is harder to replace than Water, but Totodile is still smoother by itself.
Can Chikorita finish comfortably?
Yes, when the team covers Bug, Flying, Poison, Steel, Ice, and Dragon pressure. Treat Meganium as support, not a solo sweeper.
What does the rival get?
If you pick Totodile, the rival gets Chikorita. If you pick Cyndaquil, the rival gets Totodile. If you pick Chikorita, the rival gets Cyndaquil.
