Post-game · Kanto · Mt. Silver · Final boss
How to reach Mt. Silver and beat Red
After the Hall of Fame, original Game Boy Color Gold/Silver (not HeartGold/SoulSilver) opens a full Kanto circuit. Earn all 16 badges, talk to Professor Oak, climb Silver Cave, and face Red—Pikachu Lv.81 plus Espeon, Snorlax, and the three Kanto starters at Lv.73–77.
Fast Answer
16 badges → Oak → climb → type coverage
Beat Lance, get the S.S. Ticket from Elm, sail from Olivine to Vermilion, clear all eight Kanto gyms (Power Plant + Snorlax gates included), show Oak every badge in Pallet Town, then go west via Route 28. For Red, bring Ground for Pikachu, Fighting/Dark for Espeon/Snorlax, and STAB answers for Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise. Target roughly Lv.70–80 with Full Restores stocked from shops.

Silver Cave Room 3
Red’s team (fixed moves)
Category: Final Boss. Party type label: fixed battle moves. Battle items: Full Restore ×2. Reward money: $1,925. Identical in Gold and Silver.
Slot 1 · Ace pressure
Pikachu · Lv.81
- Moves: Charm, Quick Attack, Thunderbolt, Thunder
- Threat: Highest level mon; Charm shreds Attack while Electric STAB punishes Water/Flying leads.
- Answer: Ground typing blocks the Electric moves, but Charm still lowers Attack and weakens physical Earthquake / Dig. Use a healthy Ground, special coverage, or switch to clear the drop.
Slot 2
Espeon · Lv.73
Slot 3
Snorlax · Lv.75
Slot 4
Venusaur · Lv.77
- Moves: Sunny Day, Giga Drain, Synthesis, SolarBeam
- Threat: Sun + SolarBeam and self-heal stall.
- Answer: Fire / Flying / Psychic / Ice; deny free Synthesis turns.
Slot 5
Charizard · Lv.77
- Moves: Flamethrower, Wing Attack, Slash, Fire Spin
- Threat: Fire/Flying coverage; Fire Spin can trap chip damage.
- Answer: Water / Rock / Electric; Rock Slide is classic.
Slot 6
Blastoise · Lv.77
- Moves: Rain Dance, Surf, Blizzard, Whirlpool
- Threat: Rain-boosted Surf plus Blizzard into Grass/Dragon/Ground.
- Answer: Electric / Grass; watch Blizzard freezes on switches.
Prep for the summit
Coverage checklist & fight plan
Ground for Pikachu
Lv.81 Pikachu with Charm and dual Electric STABs is the signature wipe. A Ground-type that does not care about Thunderbolt (or a grounded immunity) is the cleanest lead. Avoid pure Water/Flying leads into slot 1.
Break the walls
Espeon’s Reflect and Snorlax’s Rest/Amnesia punish passive play. Bring Fighting for Snorlax; against Espeon, Dark damage stays special while Ghost and Bug are physical and remain reduced by Reflect.
Starter triangle
Venusaur / Charizard / Blastoise force classic type triangle coverage. One strong Fire, Water, and Electric/Grass answer covers most switches. Rock also snipes Charizard hard.
Items & PP
Red holds two Full Restores. Buy Full Restores and Revives before the climb, but bring any finite Ether / Elixir pickups from your bag—marts and department stores do not sell PP-restoring items. Do not enter Room 3 low on PP.
- Open with a safe Ground answer if Pikachu leads; do not feed Charm free turns on your only physical sweeper.
- Respect Reflect and Rest—force KOs, not chip races.
- Save a healthy mon for Blastoise/Charizard if your Water or Rock answer took Pikachu damage.
- After the win, the main story route is complete; optional legendaries and dex work remain via legendary guide and Pokédex.
- Heal and restock at the Mt. Silver Pokémon Center.
- Enter Silver Cave Outside, then climb Room 1 → Room 2 → Room 3.
- Bring HM05 Flash for dark floors if your party needs visibility (field convenience, not required to start the battle).
- Watch for high-level wild encounters and item rooms—loot is optional; the boss is not.
- In Room 3, approach Red at the summit marker and start the fight when your party is healthy.

FAQ
Common Mt. Silver questions
How do I unlock Mt. Silver?
Earn all 16 badges, then speak to Professor Oak in Pallet Town. The gate toward Route 28 / Mt. Silver opens after that conversation—not after the Elite Four alone.
Where is Red?
At the summit of Mt. Silver (Silver Cave Room 3). Use the interactive map marker silvercaveroom3-2 or the trainer page.
Can I fight Red before finishing Kanto?
No. Oak requires the full badge set. Blue’s Earth Badge is the usual last step before the unlock conversation.
Is Red different in Gold vs Silver?
No. Same levels, moves, and items. Version differences matter for box legendaries and exclusives—see Gold vs Silver.
Is this the same as HeartGold/SoulSilver?
No. This page is for original GBC Gold and Silver. Remakes change level curves, items, and some routes—do not mix guide numbers with HGSS.
Tips
Common post-game blockers
Stuck without S.S. Ticket
Enter the Hall of Fame, then return to Professor Elm in New Bark. Board from Olivine Port, not the Kanto side first.
Viridian Gym still closed
Talk to Blue on ruined Cinnabar Island so he goes home. Blaine is at Seafoam, not the old Cinnabar gym building.
Snorlax still blocking Diglett’s Cave
Restore the Power Plant, get the EXPN Card in Lavender, then play the Poké Flute radio channel next to Snorlax.
Wiped by Charm + Thunderbolt
Do not lead fragile Water/Flying into Pikachu. Ground coverage first; then clean the rest of the party.
