Everything You Need to Know About Animal Pregnancy in Stardew Valley
Stardew Valley has two different ways to obtain baby animals: a random barn pregnancy/birth event and egg incubation. They should not be combined into one timer or one species rule.
Which animals can become pregnant?
The local Stardew Valley 1.6.15.24356 farm animal data records set CanGetPregnant to true for these barn animals:
| Animal | Building | Pregnancy eligible? |
|---|---|---|
| Cow | Barn | Yes |
| Goat | Big Barn | Yes |
| Sheep | Deluxe Barn | Yes |
| Pig | Deluxe Barn | Yes |
| Ostrich | Barn | No; hatch an Ostrich Egg |
| Rabbit | Coop | No |
Rabbits do not become pregnant and do not reproduce through the barn-birth event. Rabbit’s Foot and Wool are produce, not eggs or babies.

Pregnancy checklist
- Keep at least one free animal slot in the relevant Barn.
- Use an adult Cow, Goat, Sheep or Pig.
- Leave “Allow Pregnancy” enabled in that animal’s menu.
- Wait for the random overnight birth process; there is no manual breeding command and no male animal requirement.
Incubation is a separate mechanic
The exact timer depends on the egg and incubator. Local machine data uses raw processing minutes; the Coopmaster profession applies a 0.5 ready-time modifier.
| Egg / baby | Incubator | Base timer | With Coopmaster |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chicken, Void Chicken or Golden Chicken | Coop Incubator | 9,000 minutes | 4,500 minutes |
| Duck | Coop Incubator | 9,000 minutes | 4,500 minutes |
| Dinosaur | Coop Incubator | 18,000 minutes | 9,000 minutes |
| Ostrich | Ostrich Incubator in a Barn | 15,000 minutes | 7,500 minutes |
A single “12.5-day hatch time” is therefore not valid for every species. Dinosaur Eggs override the normal Coop Incubator timer, and Ostrich Eggs use a separate machine in a Barn.
Why an egg may not hatch
- The Coop or Barn is at capacity.
- The egg is in the wrong incubator.
- The building upgrade does not include the required incubator.
- The timer is still running; removing or replacing the machine is not a shortcut.
What this guide covers
