How to Change Clothes In Stardew Valley: A Beginner’s Guide
You can change equipped clothes immediately from the inventory. A Sewing Machine, Dye Pots, Cloth, and the Shrine of Illusions are not requirements for putting on a different outfit.
How to equip clothes
- Open the game menu and choose the Inventory tab.
- Select a hat, shirt, pants, or pair of footwear in your backpack.
- Place it in the matching equipment slot beside the farmer portrait. Replacing an item returns the old one to your inventory if space is available.
On mouse and keyboard, click or drag between the backpack and slot. With a controller or touch controls, select the item and then its matching slot; the exact button or gesture follows the control layout shown by your platform.

Which clothing has stats?
| Slot | Gameplay stats | Main purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Hat | None | Appearance |
| Shirt | None | Appearance; some shirts can be dyed |
| Pants | None | Appearance; many pants can be dyed |
| Footwear | Defense and/or Immunity, depending on the pair | Stats and appearance |
Shirts and pants do not provide protection. Footwear is the clothing category whose local records carry Defense and Immunity values.
Tailoring is optional customization
After obtaining Cloth, Emily can introduce the Sewing Machine and Dye Pots in her house. At the Sewing Machine, place Cloth in the cloth slot and a compatible item in the spool slot, then inspect the preview before sewing. Dye Pots recolor dyeable clothing.

Footwear can be tailored with another pair of footwear to combine an appearance with the other pair’s stats. Use the preview to verify which pair supplies each result before confirming.
Cloth sources
- Process Wool in a Loom.
- Recycle a Soggy Newspaper; the local machine data gives Cloth a 10% outcome.
- Defeat Mummies in Skull Cavern.
- Trade 3 Aquamarines for 1 Cloth at the Desert Trader on Wednesday.
The Field Research Bundle gives a Recycling Machine, not Cloth. Completing Emily’s Rock Rejuvenation Special Order is associated with the personal Sewing Machine reward; there is no “Story Board” quest.
Prismatic clothing and selling
A Prismatic Shard can be used in tailoring recipes for color-changing clothing. The Adventurer’s Guild and the Oasis do not buy tailored shirts or pants, so do not craft them as a resale strategy.
The Shrine of Illusions changes character features such as hair and other character-creation options. It is separate from the four inventory equipment slots and is unnecessary for a normal outfit change.
