Character Creation

Before you start your farm, you create your character and choose a name, appearance, farm name, pet preference, and Favorite Thing. The Favorite Thing text appears when you eat a Stardrop, the permanent-energy item. Starfruit is a separate Summer crop.

Farm Map

Vanilla Stardew Valley 1.6 offers eight farm types: Standard, Riverland, Forest, Hill-top, Wilderness, Four Corners, Beach, and Meadowlands. Standard has the most open crop space; Riverland emphasizes water; Forest provides renewable forage and hardwood; Hill-top adds a mining area; Wilderness adds night monsters; Four Corners separates several resource themes; Beach limits normal sprinkler placement on most soil; and the 1.6 Meadowlands Farm starts with a Coop and two Chickens and features Blue Grass, making it an animal-focused choice.

Controls

Now that you have set up your character and farm, it’s time to get started. The controls are simple and easy to use. You move your character with W, A, S, D and use tools with the left mouse button. You can open the menu with the space bar and use shortcuts for various actions.

First Harvest

Open Mayor Lewis’s package inside the Farmhouse to receive 15 Parsnip Seeds. Clear a small area, use the Hoe to till 15 soil tiles, plant one seed per tile, and use the Watering Can on each planted tile. Water on four growth days—if planted and watered on Spring 1, the Parsnips are ready to harvest on Spring 5. Missing a watering day does not kill them, but it delays the harvest because crops do not advance on an unwatered day.

Watering Can

The basic Watering Can waters one tile and can be refilled at a pond, river, well, or other valid water source. Clint’s upgrades increase the charged watering area, but he keeps the tool while upgrading it, so choose a forecast rainy day, the end of a season, or another time when you can safely go without it. A Sprinkler is a separate crafted object that waters nearby tilled tiles automatically each morning.

Stamina Value

Stamina limits productivity, but you can eat food to help you gain stamina. Going to bed each night will also help you regain stamina. If you go to bed later than 12:00 AM, you will not regain 100% of your stamina. If a player feels tired and does not take steps to relieve the tiredness, or does not go to bed and fall asleep on the floor after 2:00 AM, the player will wake up the next day with only half of his maximum stamina.

Skills

Stardew Valley offers a wide range of skills that players can upgrade as they progress through the game. Each skill requires the player to perform a certain type of activity in order to gain experience points (XP).

The game has five core skills—Farming, Mining, Foraging, Fishing, and Combat—and none uses a universal “+1 XP per action” rule. Leveling unlocks recipes and profession choices; it does not directly unlock new crop species or teach the character to identify plants.

At level 5 and level 10, players can choose a specialization that will provide them with additional bonuses in a particular branch of their skill tree. For example, players who specialize in farming can increase their crop yields, while those who specialize in fishing can catch higher-quality fish that sell for more at the market.

Villagers & Friendship

One of the key aspects of Stardew Valley is building relationships with the various villagers who live in the game’s community. Players can give gifts to villagers to increase their friendship level, which will unlock new dialogue options and interactive scenes.

As players become friends with a villager, they may receive recipes, gifts, or even help with their farm work. At higher friendship levels, players can even start a romantic relationship with certain characters and eventually get married.

Letters & TV
