Breeding Tool
Make Route 34 Day Care Eggs without wasting steps
In Pokemon Crystal, use the Day Care on Route 34 below Goldenrod City. Leave two compatible parents, keep one party slot open, move until the Day-Care Man appears outside, then take the Egg and hatch it in your party. If the pair has no interest or is brimming with energy, change parents.

Pair Planner
Check the parent setup before you ride
| Day-Care message | Egg result | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Appears to care for the other Pokemon | Compatible and fastest | Keep riding; this is the best pair type. |
| Friendly with the other Pokemon | Compatible | Keep riding; expect a normal wait. |
| Shows interest in the other Pokemon | Compatible but slow | Keep riding only if this is the pair you need. |
| Has no interest in the other Pokemon | No Egg | Fix gender, Egg Group, Ditto, or No Eggs status. |
| Brimming with energy | No Egg | Use a different parent; the Gen II DV-family check blocked the pair. |
Ditto is a shortcut, not a universal answer
Ditto works with most breedable Pokemon, including genderless Pokemon such as Magnemite. It does not work with another Ditto or with Pokemon in the No Eggs group.
The baby follows the mother, or the non-Ditto parent
For normal pairs, the female side determines the species line. With Ditto, the non-Ditto Pokemon is the breeding target.
Egg moves come from the compatible move source
Crystal can inherit listed Egg Moves, shared level-up moves, and compatible TM/HM/Tutor moves when the move is present on the correct parent.
Lookup Table
Common Crystal breeding projects
| Project | Good parent route | Hatch cycles | Player note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cyndaquil, Totodile, or Chikorita egg | Female starter line with Ground-group partner, or starter with Ditto | 20 | Ditto avoids the 12.5% female bottleneck. |
| Eevee egg | Bill's Eevee with Ditto, or female Eevee with Ground-group partner | 35 | Useful before planning Espeon, Umbreon, and other Eeveelutions. |
| Magnemite egg | Magnemite or Magneton with Ditto | 20 | Genderless Pokemon need Ditto in Crystal. |
| Pichu, Igglybuff, Smoochum, Elekid, Magby, or Tyrogue | Breed the adult evolution line, not the baby itself | 10-25 | Baby Pokemon are not the parents for repeat projects. |
| Larvitar egg | Larvitar line with Ditto or compatible Monster partner | 40 | Available late, so eggs help build extra copies after Mt. Silver. |
| Dratini egg | Dragonair/Dragonite line with Ditto or Dragon-group partner | 40 | Check the Dragon's Den gift path if you want ExtremeSpeed. |
Troubleshooting
Fix the no-Egg problem
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The pair has no interest | Gender, Egg Group, Ditto, or No Eggs rule failed | Swap one parent or choose a shared Egg Group. |
| The pair is brimming with energy | Generation II DV-family block | Use a different parent or a different Ditto. |
| The man is outside but no Egg joins | Your party is full | Make one party slot free and talk to him again. |
| You only received the Odd Egg | That is a one-time Crystal gift | Deposit two compatible parents for repeatable breeding Eggs. |
| The Egg will not hatch in the PC | Hatching checks only party Eggs | Carry the Egg and keep walking or biking. |
| Your egg move did not pass | The move was not on the correct source parent or not legal for the baby | Recheck the move source and Crystal learnset before another loop. |
Advanced
Shiny breeding uses old DV rules
Crystal shiny breeding is a separate advanced project. The same hidden DV system that can block a pair can also make shiny-family breeding powerful when the parent setup is right. Save before long projects, label your parents clearly, and avoid mixing shiny planning into a first Egg attempt.
