Roaming Beasts Tracker
Track Raikou and Entei without chasing every route in Johto
In Pokemon Crystal, release the beasts in Burned Tower, hunt Raikou and Entei as level 40 roaming Pokemon, and catch Suicune through the Clear Bell and Tin Tower story path. Use this page to pick a route loop, check your Repel lead, save your capture prep, and avoid bad-save mistakes.
Fast Answer
Only Raikou and Entei need the roaming routine
After Burned Tower, Raikou and Entei can appear on a set of Johto land routes. You need one first sighting before Pokedex Area tracking becomes useful. Suicune still belongs to the trio, but in Crystal the final catch is a fixed Tin Tower battle after the Clear Bell route.

Route 36 / Route 37 hub
Best all-purpose start. Route 36 connects into Route 31, Route 32, Route 35, and Route 37 in the roamer route table, so it gives frequent land-route changes near Ecruteak and Violet.
Use when you want fast resets near grass.
Route 37 / Route 38 chase
Useful after Raikou or Entei is seen once. Check Pokedex Area, move between adjacent routes, and enter grass only when the target lands on your current route.
Use when the Pokedex shows Ecruteak-side routes.
Route 42 / 43 / 44 chain
Good for eastern Johto tracking. Route 42 can connect toward Routes 37, 38, 43, and 44, letting you chase a beast that keeps landing around Mahogany.
Use when Area points east of Ecruteak.
Unlock
Burned Tower B1F
Step into the basement event in Ecruteak City. After the beasts flee, Raikou and Entei become active roaming encounters.
Suicune Split
Tin Tower 1F
Do not hunt grass for Suicune's final Crystal battle. Finish the Clear Bell route, pass the Wise Trio, save, then take the fixed level 40 fight.

| Question | Crystal rule | Player action |
|---|---|---|
| Why do I need a first sighting? | Pokedex Area tracking works after the beast has been seen. | Use a compact route loop until Raikou or Entei appears once. |
| What lead level works with Repels? | Raikou and Entei are level 40. | Lead with level 39 or 40. Avoid level 41+ while Repel hunting. |
| Does Fly help? | Changing maps can move the roamers. | Use Fly to reposition, then check Area again instead of blindly searching. |
| Does damage stay? | Roamer HP is stored between encounters until caught or defeated. | Chip HP carefully over multiple meetings; do not rush a KO. |
| What if it uses Roar or flees? | The hunt continues if the beast is not defeated or caught. | Track it again. Bring sleep and fast action for serious catch attempts. |
| When are stats and shiny values set? | Roaming DVs are created on the first wild encounter with that beast. | Shiny or stat hunters should set a clean save before the first encounter. |
| Can I use Fast Balls for Raikou? | Old Gen II ball advice is unreliable for these roamers. | Use Master Ball for speed, or Ultra Balls/Level Balls with low HP and sleep. |

Stuck Fixer
Pick the problem state
Pokedex has no Area page yet
You have not seen that beast. Use the first-sighting loop with a level 39 or 40 lead, Repels, and grass on a route from the roaming route set.
Repels seem to block everything
Check your lead. Level 41+ is too high for level 40 Raikou and Entei. Level 39 or 40 keeps the roamer eligible.
The beast fled immediately
That is normal. Recheck Area, move routes, and repeat. Chip damage stays, so every safe hit can matter.
It used Roar
Do not treat that as a lost save by itself. Track it again and use faster sleep or the Master Ball if you cannot afford more attempts.
You defeated it and saved
That beast is gone on this save. Use an older save if available. For future attempts, save before hunting sessions and reset after a KO.
You want shiny or stat values
Set the clean save before the first wild encounter with that beast. After that first meeting, the stored values are no longer a fresh roll.
