How to beat Whitney in Pokemon Gold & Silver
Whitney’s party is identical in both versions: Clefairy Lv.18 and the infamous Miltank Lv.20. Miltank stacks Attract, ramping Rollout, Stomp, and Milk Drink. The fight is fair once you bring Fighting damage or a Rock wall, and ideally a female lead so Attract fails.
Fast Answer
Female Machop or a Rock wall
Catch Drowzee on Route 34, trade it on Dept Store 5F for the female Machop Muscle, and open with Fighting moves. No trade? Raise Geodude from Dark Cave / Union Cave / Route 46, or take Kyle’s Onix in Violet for a Bellsprout. Target party levels 18–22, keep the counter healthy past Clefairy, and break Rollout before it snowballs.
Goldenrod Gym fight
Whitney’s team
Specialty: Normal. Whitney uses fixed battle moves (not default level-up sets). Recommended fight window: Lv.18–21. Optional gym trainers: Beauty Victoria (Sentret line), Beauty Samantha (Meowth×2), Lass Bridget (Jigglypuff×3), Lass Carrie (Snubbull Lv.18).
Slot 1
Clefairy · Lv.18
- Moves: DoubleSlap, Mimic, Encore, Metronome
- Threat: Soft opener; Encore can lock a setup move; Metronome is random
- Answer: Finish quickly with Fighting or strong STAB—save items for Miltank
Slot 2 · Ace
Miltank · Lv.20
- Moves: Rollout, Attract, Stomp, Milk Drink
- Threat: Attract on males, Rollout ramp (30→60→120…), 50% heal, solid Stomp chip
- Answer: Female Fighting mon, Rock wall, or status to reset Rollout
Why the wipe happens
Miltank threat kit
Attract
Works only on the opposite gender. Whitney’s Miltank is female, so male leads lose turns. Female, genderless, or already-infatuated-safe leads dodge the gimmick. Same-gender fails Attract entirely.
Rollout
Rock-type multi-turn attack that doubles power each successful hit (base 30, then 60, 120, 240…). A KO, switch, miss, Protect, or status interrupt resets the chain. Do not sit and take three free turns.
Stomp
Reliable Normal STAB (power 65). Rock and Steel resist it. Ghost is immune. Combined with Rollout chip, this is why underleveled glass cannons explode.
Milk Drink
Restores half of Miltank’s max HP. If you cannot threaten a KO window, she stalls. Bring Super Potions so your counter can outpace the heal.
The gym guide says it plainly: use Fighting-types. Rock walls also blunt Stomp and Rollout while you set up the KO.
Path A · Recommended
Female Machop trade (Muscle)
1. Catch Drowzee
- Route 34 sits between Ilex Forest and Goldenrod—you walk it on the way into the city.
- Also appears on Route 35 if you are hunting north of Goldenrod before the gym.
- Any Drowzee works; the trade does not request a specific gender or level.
2. Trade on 5F for Muscle
- NPC trade on Goldenrod Dept Store 5F: give Drowzee → receive Machop nicknamed Muscle.
- This Machop is female, so Miltank’s Attract fails against her.
- She holds a Gold Berry. Raise toward Lv.18–22 with Fighting moves (Low Kick / Karate Chop and friends).
- Wild Machop shows up much later (Mt. Mortar and beyond)—this trade is the early Fighting answer.
Fight plan with Muscle
- Open on Clefairy; conserve PP and items for Miltank.
- Against Miltank, force damage every turn—do not let Rollout reach the third hit.
- If Milk Drink stalls, Super Potion your lead and keep Fighting STAB coming.
- Keep male backups for cleanup only after Attract no longer matters.
Path B · No Fighting trade
Geodude / Onix Rock walls
Geodude
- Dark Cave (Violet entrance) Lv.2–4, Route 46, Union Cave.
- Resists Stomp (Normal) and heavily resists Rollout (Rock into Rock/Ground).
- Pair with status or a second attacker if damage is slow—Milk Drink still exists.
Onix · wild or Kyle trade
- Wild Onix in Union Cave, or trade a Bellsprout to Kyle in Violet City for Onix “Rocky”.
- Same Rock/Ground defensive profile as Geodude with more bulk at this stage.
- Still benefits from a female gender if you want Attract insurance.
Bonus · Heracross / Ghost
- Heracross from rare Headbutt trees (TM Headbutt available in Goldenrod Dept Store / Ilex Headbutt guy) is Bug/Fighting and shreds Miltank if you find one.
- Gastly at night in Sprout Tower is immune to Stomp, but Rollout still hits—treat Ghost as a support answer, not a full free win.
- Starter stages (Quilava / Croconaw / Bayleef) can brute-force with levels and items, but type does not help much.
Suggested order
Goldenrod block flow
- Finish Azalea / Bugsy, recover Farfetch’d in Ilex Forest, teach HM01 Cut.
- On Route 34, catch Drowzee (and anything else your catch checklist wants).
- In Goldenrod: Radio Card quiz, free Bicycle, and stock Super Potions in the Dept Store. Full Heal cures normal status and confusion, but not Attract.
- Trade Drowzee → Machop on 5F, or confirm your Rock wall is leveled.
- Clear or skip gym trainers; open the Goldenrod Gym tool for the exact layout.
- Defeat Clefairy, then Miltank. Move down to trigger Bridget’s scene, then talk to Whitney again for the Plain Badge and TM45 Attract.
- Visit the Flower Shop for the Squirtbottle, then clear Sudowoodo on Route 36 toward Ecruteak (walkthrough).

Tips
Common wipe causes
All-male party
Attract turns a healthy lead into a coin flip. One female or genderless answer changes the whole fight.
Letting Rollout ramp
The third and fourth hits delete mid-game teams. Switch, status, or KO early rather than “one more turn.”
Burning the counter on Clefairy
Clefairy is the tutorial mon. Finish it cheaply so Miltank faces full HP Fighting/Rock damage.
Leaving without the badge
If Whitney is still crying, walk down to trigger Bridget’s scene, then talk to Whitney again. Grab Squirtbottle afterward—Sudowoodo blocks Ecruteak.
