How to breed in Pokemon Gold & Silver
Leave two compatible parents at the Route 34 Day Care, walk until the man has an Egg, then hatch it in your party. This guide covers compatibility odds, hatch steps for every species, baby forms, egg moves, and the Gen 2 shiny DV inheritance path using Ditto or the Lake of Rage Red Gyarados—linked to the live Mechanics Lab, map, Pokédex, and catch tools.
Fast answer
Deposit → walk → Egg → hatch
On Route 34 (south of Goldenrod), put one parent with the Day-Care man and one with the Day-Care lady. They must share an egg group (or use Ditto), opposite genders when not using Ditto, and not be blocked by matching Defense + Special DV bits.
After enough steps the man moves outside with an Egg. The Egg hatches at level 5; the hatch counter lives in the happiness byte and drops once every 256 steps. Use the live Mechanics Lab breeding tool for pair checks and full hatch tables.
Location
Route 34 Day Care
1. Unlock the area
- Reach Goldenrod City early in the Johto story.
- Exit south through the gate onto Route 34 toward Ilex Forest.
- The Day Care building sits on the east side of the route; the man appears outside only when an Egg is ready.
2. Deposit two parents
- Talk to the man and the lady inside the Day Care—one mon each.
- Levels rise while deposited (pay when you withdraw).
- Moves can be forgotten while leveling in Day Care; keep important egg moves on the parent you want to pass before depositing if needed.
3. Walk for the Egg
- First Egg check waits a random 150–255 steps after a compatible pair is set.
- Later checks roll every 1–256 steps (average ~128.5).
- When the man is outside, talk to him to receive the Egg (party space required).
Route 34
South of Goldenrod. Wild Ditto here; Day Care man stands outside with Eggs.
Day Care building
Deposit with the man and lady. Withdraw and pay the leveling fee here.
Route 35
Extra Ditto grass slots north of Goldenrod if Route 34 is slow.
Egg chance
Compatibility tiers
Each periodic check rolls a random 0–255 against the tier threshold. Higher values fire more often. Trade a parent once if you want the best “different OT” rate without owning two cartridges permanently.
| Day-Care message | Condition | Chance |
|---|---|---|
| Appears to care | Same species · different Original Trainer IDs | 80/256 · 31.25% |
| Friendly | Same species · same OT | 40/256 · 15.625% |
| Friendly | Different species · different OT | 30/256 · 11.72% |
| Shows interest | Different species · same OT | 10/256 · 3.91% |
Must be compatible
- Share an egg group, or one parent is Ditto.
- Opposite genders if neither is Ditto.
- Genderless species need Ditto (e.g. Magnemite line, Staryu line, Porygon).
Blocked pairs
- Any parent in the No Eggs group (legendaries, babies, Nidoqueen line, Unown, etc.).
- Two Ditto together.
- Same gender without Ditto.
- Matching Defense DVs and matching low three Special DV bits (“brimming with energy” but no Egg).
Lookup
Hatch steps by species
Hatch cycles are stored on the Egg and tick down every 256 party steps. Approximate total steps = cycles × 256. Search below uses the same breeding dataset as the Mechanics Lab.
1,280 steps
Magikarp, Gyarados — ideal for testing the shiny DV method quickly.
5,120 steps
Most species (20 cycles), including Ditto’s own species egg group partners.
8,960–10,240+
Eevee line 8,960; Chansey, Lapras, Snorlax, Larvitar line 10,240. Legendaries are not breedable.

What the Egg keeps
Species, moves, and DVs
Species
- Follows the mother, or the non-Ditto parent.
- Rewinds up to two pre-evolutions (e.g. Dragonite → Dragonair → Dratini).
- Nidoran♀ eggs randomly become Nidoran♀ or Nidoran♂.
- Breeding Pikachu/Raichu yields Pichu; Clefairy → Cleffa; Jigglypuff → Igglybuff; Togetic → Togepi; etc.
Moves
- Eggs start with the baby’s level-up moves for Lv.5, then inherit heritable moves.
- Parents can pass species egg moves, shared level-up moves, and compatible TM/HM moves.
- Open any move page or Pokédex entry for the full egg-move learner list.
DVs (IVs)
- Egg rolls random Attack & Speed, then overwrites Defense and the low 3 Special bits from one parent.
- If either parent is Ditto, that inheritance always uses Ditto’s DVs.
- Without Ditto, the offspring inherits those Defense / Special bits from the same-gender parent.
- HP DV is derived from the other four DVs (Gen 2 formula).
Shiny method
Shiny DVs: 1/64 Ditto vs ~1/128 Red route
Red Gyarados route
- Catch the Lake of Rage Red Gyarados (forced shiny: Defense 10, Speed 10, Special 10, Attack 14).
- Breed it with a Magikarp or Gyarados of the opposite gender. Do not pair it with Ditto if you want the Gyarados DVs available—Ditto always supplies the inherited Def/Spc bits.
- Non-Ditto offspring inherit Defense and the low Special bits from the same-gender parent. The fixed Red Gyarados is male, so it seeds male Magikarp eggs; female eggs inherit from the female partner instead.
- About half the eggs are male and eligible. Their conditional shiny roll is 1/64, making the ordinary overall Red Gyarados route about 1/128.
- Magikarp eggs hatch in only 1,280 steps—fast for mass hatching.
Shiny Ditto route
- If you have a shiny Ditto (trade, luck, or other methods), breed it with any breedable species.
- With Ditto as a parent, Def/Spc inheritance always comes from Ditto—so a shiny Ditto seeds every egg family at 1/64.
- Wild Ditto: Route 34 (~5% grass slot) and Route 35 (~4%).
- Normal Ditto does not boost shiny odds; it only copies whatever DVs it rolled in the wild.
Keep the party moving
Hatch counters only drop while the Egg is in the party. Bike on long straight routes (e.g. Route 35–36 loops) to burn cycles faster.
Different OT for more Eggs
Trade one parent to a friend (or second cart) and back so OT IDs differ—jump to the 31.25% same-species tier.
Not HGSS mechanics
HeartGold/SoulSilver use a different IV/Masuda system. This page is original GBC Gold & Silver only.
Breed-only forms

FAQ
Common breeding questions
How do you breed Pokemon in Gold and Silver?
Deposit two compatible parents at the Route 34 Day Care, walk until the man outside offers an Egg, then hatch it in your party. Eggs hatch at level 5 after their cycle counter reaches zero (one tick per 256 steps).
Why won’t the Day Care give me an Egg?
Check genders, egg groups, and the “brimming with energy” DV clash. Legendaries, babies, and No Eggs species never produce Eggs. Two Ditto cannot breed. Give it more steps—even the best pair only succeeds on 31.25% of checks.
How long does an Egg take to hatch?
It depends on the species’ base egg cycles. Magikarp is 1,280 steps; most mons are 5,120; Eevee is 8,960; Larvitar and Chansey are 10,240. Use the hatch table on this page or the Mechanics Lab for exact values.
How does shiny breeding work in Gen 2?
Shininess is pure DVs. Inheritance passes Defense and part of Special from one parent. Shiny Ditto supplies the required bits to every egg for 1/64 overall. The male Red Gyarados supplies them only to same-gender (male) Magikarp eggs, so the conditional roll is 1/64 but the ordinary overall rate is about 1/128. Wild odds stay 1/8192.
Where do I get Ditto?
Wild grass on Route 34 (Lv.10, ~5% slot) and Route 35 (Lv.10, ~4% slot), same in Gold and Silver. Trainers such as Scientist Mitch also use Ditto later, but wild catches are the usual Day Care partner.
