How to catch the Red Gyarados

The Lake of Rage holds Gen 2’s famous guaranteed shiny: a level 30 Gyarados forced into the red shiny palette. Surf out, save, catch (or KO), claim the Red Scale, talk to Lance, then cash the scale for Exp.Share at Mr. Pokémon. This guide is for original Game Boy Color Gold & Silver—not HeartGold/SoulSilver—and links every stop to the live map, items, walkthrough, and catch tools.

Fast answer

Surf → lake → shiny → scale

Reach Mahogany Town (typical window: after Jasmine, party roughly mid-to-high 20s). Head north on Route 43 to the Lake of Rage. Surf to the red Gyarados in the water, save on the shore or adjacent tile, then start the battle.

Battle facts: Gyarados Lv.30, catch rate 45, types Water/Flying, forced shiny DVs. You cannot run. Catch or KO—both grant the Red Scale. Lance appears afterward and points you at the Mahogany shop / Rocket Hideout.

How to get there

Mahogany → Route 43 → Lake of Rage

1. Requirements

  • HM03 Surf from the Kimono Girls in Ecruteak (after the Burned Tower / dance hall sequence).
  • Fog Badge from Morty so Surf works outdoors.
  • Open path into Mahogany: usually via Route 42 after Olivine / Jasmine, or whenever your story has unlocked the mountain road.
  • Balls: Ultra / Great stack recommended; catch rate 45 is much kinder than legendaries (rate 3).

2. Travel path

  • Enter Mahogany Town and heal at the Pokémon Center.
  • Exit north through the gate onto Route 43.
  • Follow Route 43 north to the crater lake labeled Lake of Rage (sign: “also known as Gyarados Lake”).
  • Optional: clear shore trainers (Fisher Andre has a Lv.27 Gyarados) before surfing so you are not interrupted mid-setup.
Walkthrough Lv. 27–32 block Same on Gold & Silver

3. Find the red sprite

  • On the overworld, a red Gyarados sprite sits on the water at tile (18, 22).
  • Surf until you face that object and interact to start the scripted battle.
  • Ordinary blue Gyarados from Surf/fishing on the lake are not forced shiny—only this static encounter is.
One scripted mon. Soft-reset before interacting if you want another attempt after a KO or a bad catch fail that ends the fight.

Catch the forced shiny Gyarados

Static encounter

Red Gyarados

Water Flying
  • Level: 30
  • Shiny: Always (forced shiny battle—not a 1/8192 roll)
  • Shiny DVs: fixed to the shiny values used by this encounter
  • Catch rate: 45 (same as a normal Gyarados)
  • Base stats: 95 / 125 / 79 / 81 / 60 / 100 (HP–SpD), total 540
  • Location: Lake of Rage water sprite
Cannot run Cannot Teleport Same on Gold & Silver

Moves at level 30

Level-up table for Gyarados in Gold/Silver (what a Lv.30 mon has available):

Level Move Type Power
1 Thrash Normal 90
20 Bite Dark 60
25 Dragon Rage Dragon 40 fixed
30 Leer Normal

Watch Thrash lock and residual damage. Electric, Rock, and strong special hits punish Water/Flying hard if you fight to KO instead of catch.

Catch plan

  • Save immediately before interacting with the sprite.
  • Lead with something that can take a hit and use careful low-power chip without KOing. Original Gold/Silver has only TM01–TM50 and no False Swipe TM, so rely on weak moves and status.
  • Sleep / paralysis helps. Avoid Freeze if you cannot thaw-control (standard Gen 2 catch math still loves Sleep).
  • Stock Great Balls before the story encounter. Ultra Balls first appear for sale in Blackthorn, which is normally still inaccessible at this point.
  • Master Ball is better saved for roamers / mascots—this mon is catchable without it.
KO still advances the story. Defeating it removes the overworld sprite and still gives the Red Scale. Only soft-reset if you wanted the Pokémon in your party.

Why it is red

Forced shiny battle type paints the red palette and locks DVs to the shiny combination. Wild shiny odds elsewhere remain 1/8192; this encounter is separate and guaranteed.

Team use

Water/Flying with 125 Attack makes physical Normal coverage such as Hyper Beam hit hard. Surf and Waterfall are useful STAB, but Water moves use Special Attack in Gen II rather than that 125 Attack stat. Slot it in the Team Planner or compare with Magikarp evolutions in the Pokédex.

Lake wilds vs static

Surf/fishing on the lake can yield ordinary Magikarp and blue Gyarados. Those use the normal encounter tables and the normal 1/8192 shiny roll—not the guaranteed red sprite.

Key item reward

Red Scale → Exp.Share

Red Scale

Key ItemOne-time
  • Granted immediately after the Lake of Rage battle ends (catch or KO).
  • Description: “A scale from the red GYARADOS.”
  • Held only as a key item until you hand it to Mr. Pokémon.
Mr. Pokemon house

Mr. Pokémon exchange

Route 30Exp.Share
  • Return to Mr. Pokémon’s house on Route 30 (east of Cherrygrove).
  • Talk with the Red Scale in your bag → trade for Exp.Share.
  • Exp.Share is a held item that splits experience with the holder—great for training a second mon through mid-game gyms.

Optional timing

  • You can finish Lance’s Mahogany investigation first; the scale stays in the bag until you visit Route 30.
  • A second Exp.Share can later appear as a Lucky Number Show prize, but the Red Scale trade is the reliable story gift.
  • Mark Gyarados on the catch checklist if you are tracking a living dex.

Story continuation

Lance, Rocket Hideout, Radio Tower

Talk to Lance

  • After the battle, Lance appears on the shore and asks for help investigating the forced Magikarp evolutions.
  • Agreeing advances the plot into the Mahogany “souvenir shop” → Team Rocket Base.
  • Refusing only delays; you can talk to him again.
