Best starter in Pokemon Gold & Silver

Pick between Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile for the original Game Boy Color games—not HeartGold or SoulSilver. This page ranks them for a first Johto playthrough, shows every early gym matchup, and gives no-trade sample teams you can load into the Team Planner.

Fast Answer

Take Cyndaquil unless you want a challenge

For most first playthroughs of original Gold or Silver, Cyndaquil is the best starter: early evolution (Lv.14 / 36), high Special Attack and Speed as Typhlosion, strong answers to Bugsy, Jasmine, and many mid-game walls. Choose Totodile if you prefer a bulky mixed attacker that evolves into Feraligatr by Lv.30; Slash uses its high Attack, while Water, Dark, and Ice attacks use Special Attack under Gen II’s type-based categories. Choose Chikorita only if you want a bulkier support-style run and accept a rougher Falkner and Bugsy. All three can beat Red with good teammates—starter quality is about route friction, not a hard lock.

Side-by-side

Starter comparison

Stats and evolution levels come from the original Gold/Silver species data used by this site’s Pokédex. The Rival always takes the type that is strong against your pick (Grass beats Water, Water beats Fire, Fire beats Grass).

  • Wins: Bugsy, many Grass/Bug/Steel walls, fast offense.

  • Rival gets: Totodile line (Water advantage early).

Strong alternative

Totodile → Feraligatr

Water
18 / 30Evo levels
530Feraligatr BST
105Attack final
  • Playstyle: Bulky mixed attacker; Slash is physical, while Bite, Water moves, and Ice coverage are special in Gen II.
  • Wins: Whitney durability, Piloswine, and broad neutral coverage; Ice Punch support helps against Clair.
  • Needs help: Bugsy (Scyther), Grass specials, Electric cores.
  • Rival gets: Chikorita line (Grass advantage).

Hard mode

Chikorita → Meganium

Grass
16 / 32Evo levels
525Meganium BST
100Def / SpD final
  • Playstyle: Bulk + screens; Reflect, Light Screen, Synthesis, Razor Leaf / Body Slam.
  • Wins: Grass damage threatens all three of Pryce’s Pokémon, but their Ice moves remain dangerous; screens support frail offense partners.
  • Needs help: Falkner, Bugsy, Morty’s Ghosts, Fire and Flying everywhere.
  • Rival gets: Cyndaquil line (Fire advantage).

Who should pick what

Decision guide

Pick Cyndaquil if…

You want the smoothest first Johto run, enjoy special attackers, and plan to lean on Ampharos / Water partners for Rock and Ground.

Pick Totodile if…

You like mixed attackers, want a starter that stays useful through Kanto, and do not mind patching Bugsy with Geodude or Onix. Headbutt Heracross is only available after Bugsy.

Pick Chikorita if…

You want a defensive support ace, enjoy screen teams, and accept recruiting Fire and Flying answers before the third gym.

Tags rate how much the starter line alone helps—not whether the fight is impossible. Always cross-check exact parties on the Gym and Trainers tools. Whitney remains a party-level problem for every starter; see the Whitney guide.

  • Why it works: Fire/Electric/Water/Fighting/Rock-Steel/Psychic coverage for Johto + Kanto badges.
  • Whitney plan: Heracross or female Machop trade (optional) for Miltank; see Whitney guide.
  • Onix note: Wild in Union Cave or Kyle’s Violet City NPC trade (Bellsprout → Onix). Metal Coat + link trade to Steelix is optional.
  • HM note: Gyarados learns Surf/Waterfall; Ampharos can take TM41 ThunderPunch. Original Gold/Silver has no Thunderbolt TM; use TM/HM and Team Planner HM coverage.

Early game (pre-Whitney)

Quilava road team

  • Quilava after Lv.14 — Ember from Lv.12 carries Bugsy. Flame Wheel is Lv.27 if you stay Cyndaquil, or Lv.31 after evolving into Quilava/Typhlosion.
  • Geodude from Dark Cave (Violet entrance) / Union Cave for Falkner and Whitney Rollout races.
  • Mareep on Route 32 — Electric for later Surf spam and Water gyms.
  • Togepi from the Mystery Egg if you hatch it; optional cute-normal support.
  • Optional: Gastly in Sprout Tower for Morty prep.

  • Version swap: Gold catches Growlithe; Silver catches Vulpix on the same Johto routes. Keep the base form through Johto if needed—the normally guaranteed Fire Stone route is in Kanto.
  • Bugsy patch: Catch Geodude or Onix before Azalea so Scyther does not snowball. Headbutt and Heracross come after Bugsy in Ilex Forest.
  • Shared Ground slot: Wooper → Quagsire is available in both versions and keeps this no-trade team legal without mixing in Silver-only Donphan.
  • Clair / E4: Teach TM33 Ice Punch where legal. Original Gold/Silver has no Ice Beam TM; verify coverage in Moves.

Early game

Croconaw road team

  • Evolve Totodile at Lv.18 before or just after Whitney; Feraligatr arrives at Lv.30 (earliest final form of the three).
  • Pair with Geodude and Mareep immediately after Violet/Route 32.
  • Use Slowpoke from the Well if you want Psychic depth before Morty.
  • Bite on the Totodile line is a free Dark tool against Morty’s Ghosts.

  • Early priority: Geodude before Falkner/Bugsy. Do not force Bayleef to solo Flying or Bug.
  • Fire is mandatory: Gold → Growlithe. Silver → plan Houndour in Kanto or a trade; until then overlevel Ampharos + Gyarados.
  • Meganium role: Reflect / Light Screen / Synthesis / Razor Leaf or Body Slam—set up for Heracross and Gyarados KOs.
  • Rival Cyndaquil: Expect Fire STAB forever; never leave Meganium in on Quilava/Typhlosion without a resist switch.

Early game

Bayleef survival kit

  • Evolve at Lv.16; stock Potions for Falkner’s dual Flying.
  • Recruit Geodude and optionally Kyle’s Onix trade in Violet (Bellsprout → Onix).
  • Grab Mareep on Route 32 the moment the path opens.
  • Headbutt trees for Heracross before Goldenrod if possible.
  • After Whitney, Squirtbottle → Ecruteak; do not overlevel Grass into Morty’s immunities—bring Bite/Ghost answers.

Recruiting board

High-value early picks (any starter)

Mareep → Ampharos

Electric

Route 32 grass (also Route 42). Best universal special partner for every starter. Covers Water and Flying spam through both regions.

Geodude → Golem*

RockGround

Dark Cave (Violet entrance from early game), Union Cave, Route 46. Fixes Falkner, Bugsy chip, Whitney Rollout, and Jasmine support. Trade evolve to Golem optional.

Heracross

BugFighting

Headbutt rare trees (Route 29 onward). Premier Whitney answer and late Normal/Rock/Steel pressure without relying on Machop trades.

Eevee → Espeon / Umbreon

Normal

Gift in Goldenrod (Bill’s family). Day friendship → Espeon; night → Umbreon. Flexible special attacker or wall for every starter team.

Magikarp → Gyarados

WaterFlying

Fish early and evolve at 20. High HP and Attack make it sturdy even though Water moves use Special Attack in Gen II; Bite and later Surf still add useful coverage. The Red Gyarados at Lake of Rage is also a guaranteed shiny.

Machop (trade or wild)

Fighting

Goldenrod Dept Store 5F NPC trade (Drowzee → female Muscle) is the classic Whitney counter. Wild Machop appears later in Mt. Mortar.

Practical notes

Things that trip first playthroughs

Original GBC, not remakes

Move tutors, Pokéwalker, and some encounter rates differ in HeartGold/SoulSilver. Evolution levels here match the original cartridges used by this site’s data dumps.

HM slaves vs battle slots

Surf, Fly, Strength, Waterfall, and Whirlpool eat moveslots. Use the Team Planner HM panel and TM/HM locations so your starter is not carrying every field move.

Version exclusives fill holes

Gold’s Growlithe and Silver’s Phanpy/Skarmory change Fire/Ground/Steel options. Check Gold vs Silver before locking a six-mon fantasy team.

Legendaries are optional power

Ho-Oh, Lugia, and the beasts are post-badge or roaming extras. Build a badge team first; catch legendaries with the legendary hub when ready.
