How to get the Squirtbottle and move Sudowoodo

The “weird tree” on Route 36 is a one-time Sudowoodo Lv.20 encounter. You cannot force the fight until you hold the Squirtbottle, and the Flower Shop will not give that key item until you own the Plain Badge from Whitney. Same sequence in Gold and Silver (not HeartGold/SoulSilver).

Fast answer

Plain Badge → Flower Shop → water the tree

1) Beat Whitney, move down to trigger Bridget’s scene, then talk to Whitney again for the Plain Badge. 2) Enter Goldenrod Flower Shop and talk to the teacher for the Squirtbottle. 3) Go to the weird tree on Route 36, use the bottle, and fight Sudowoodo Lv.20. Catch it if you want the mon—running or KOing also clears the road, and the tree does not return. 4) Speak to the man nearby for TM08 Rock Smash, then head north through Route 37 to Ecruteak.

Exact order

Step-by-step: bottle, tree, Ecruteak

Step 1

Earn the Plain Badge

Clear Goldenrod Gym. Whitney uses Clefairy Lv.18 and Miltank Lv.20. After the win, move down to trigger Bridget’s scene, then talk to Whitney again for the badge and TM45 Attract; leaving or waiting alone does not advance it.

Step 2

Goldenrod Flower Shop

The shop sits beside the gym on Goldenrod’s main strip. Once the Plain Badge is in your badge case, the teacher praises you for beating Whitney and gifts the Squirtbottle.

  • Without the badge she only waters plants (“Lalala…”)
  • Floria explains the “moving tree” on Route 36
  • Item page: Squirtbottle

Step 3

Travel to Route 36

From Goldenrod go north: Route 35 → National Park gates → Route 36. The weird tree stands in the middle of the road and blocks east–west and northbound progress toward Ecruteak.

  • Map: Route 35 · National Park · Route 36
  • Interacting without the bottle only shakes the tree
  • Optional: Bug-Catching Contest later in the Park

Step 4

Use Squirtbottle → fight

Face the tree and confirm Use SQUIRTBOTTLE? (or use the key item from the pack on the tile). Sudowoodo attacks as a wild mon: level 20, Rock-type.

  • Catch rate 65 · one static encounter
  • Save first if you want the catch
  • After the battle the tree is gone for good

Step 5

TM08 + road to Ecruteak

Talk to the man standing near the cleared tree for TM08 Rock Smash. Continue north on Route 37 into Ecruteak City (Burned Tower, Dance Theater / Surf later, Morty).

  • Walkthrough: Sudowoodo → Ecruteak
  • Next story hubs: Burned Tower, Kimono Girls, Surf
  • Rock Smash also appears in Goldenrod Dept Store 5F later for repurchase timing

Why the shop refuses you

The Flower Shop script checks the Plain Badge flag before the gift. Beating Whitney is not enough if you never re-talked to her after the tears—the badge (and badge flag) only hand over on that second conversation.

  • No badge → teacher stays in watering dialogue
  • Floria mentions Whitney must be strong enough for the “tree”
  • After the gift, the teacher keeps watering plants; you keep the bottle forever

Catch vs KO vs run

  • Catch: Best if you want a free Rock body for Morty prep, Rollout support, or dex completion. False Swipe + sleep/paralysis helps; stock Great Balls from Goldenrod Dept Store.
  • KO: Clears the road immediately. You will not meet this tree again on this cart.
  • Run / flee result: The game still marks the fight as done and the tree flees permanently—same as losing the catch opportunity.
  • Tip: Save before watering if the catch matters. Weak to Water, Grass, Fighting, Ground, and Steel damage.

After the Squirtbottle is used, Route 36 always starts a level 20 Sudowoodo battle. Water, Grass, Fighting, and Ground moves finish the fight quickly if you only need the path open.

FAQ

Common Sudowoodo blockers

Tree only shakes

You do not have the Squirtbottle yet, or you are not confirming its use. Earn the Plain Badge, visit the Flower Shop, then interact again.

Shop will not give the bottle

Missing Plain Badge. Finish Whitney and re-talk for the badge. The gift is badge-gated, not “visit shop once” gated.

Can I get another Sudowoodo?

Not from this tree. It is a single static script. Later options need breeding, trade, or other games—not a second Route 36 spawn.

Is this different in Crystal / HGSS?

This page is original Gold/Silver GBC. Crystal keeps the Squirtbottle gate; HeartGold/SoulSilver remakes change presentation and surrounding content. Use GBC tools on this site for map accuracy.

What is TM08 for?

Rock Smash breaks cracked rocks in the field and is a weak Fighting attack. Free gift next to Sudowoodo after the tree is gone; see the TM / HM list.

Next story goals?

Ecruteak: Burned Tower (legendary beasts start roaming after), Dance Theater for HM03 Surf later in the sequence, then Morty’s gym. Open the walkthrough for the ordered list.
