Team Builder · In-game & no-trade
Best team Pokemon Yellow
Build a single-cart best in-game team around partner Pikachu, then lock roles for Brock, the eight gyms, and the Elite Four. The default shell below needs no link trades. Switch to trade mode only if you want Alakazam or Gengar upgrades.
Fast Answer
Default no-trade six
Pikachu · Nidoking · Vaporeon · Kadabra · Arcanine · Fearow. Catch Nidoran♂ early for Brock and Moon Stone evolution, grab Celadon rooftop Eevee for Vaporeon (mid-game, after Rock Tunnel), raise wild Abra from Routes 5–8 (or the Game Corner prize) into Kadabra (not Alakazam), evolve Pokemon Mansion Growlithe with a Fire Stone for late Arcanine, and keep Spearow/Fearow for Fly. Until Cinnabar, use Flareon, gift Charmander, or Vulpix for Fire. Swap Vaporeon for gift Lapras or Gyarados if you prefer Surf on that slot.
Showing the single-cart shell. Trade evolutions stay filtered out of the primary six.
Recommended shell
Six roles that clear Kanto
Pikachu
- Role: Story Electric; Thunderbolt by level in Yellow
- Limit: Partner refuses Thunder Stone - no Raichu on this cart
- Later swap: Jolteon or Zapdos if you want more bulk/power
Nidoking
- Join: Nidoran♂ on Route 22 / Route 2; Moon Stone after Lv.16 Nidorino
- Why: Early Brock answer, thrash physical mid-game, TM sponge
- Pair: Works beside Pikachu from gym 1 onward
Vaporeon
- Join: Celadon Mansion rooftop Eevee + Water Stone
- Why: Huge HP and Special water damage for mid/late Ground cores (Giovanni, League)
- Timing: Eevee is a Celadon rooftop gift after Rock Tunnel - not available for Misty
- Alt: Lapras (Silph gift), Gyarados, Starmie, Blastoise
Kadabra
- Join: Abra on Routes 5/6/7/8 (or Game Corner prize) → Kadabra at Lv.16; wild Kadabra also on Route 8
- Why: Elite Special and Speed without trading into Alakazam
- Alt: Hypno (bulkier) or Exeggutor (Grass/Psychic)
Alakazam
- Requirement: Trade Kadabra - cannot evolve on a single cart
- Why: Best Special attacker in Gen 1 when trading is allowed
- No-trade note: Use Kadabra or Hypno instead
Arcanine
- Join: Pokemon Mansion Growlithe (Cinnabar, late) + Fire Stone - not Route 7/8 grass in Yellow
- Why: Strong Attack and bulk once you reach the Mansion; answers Grass and Ice threats
- Earlier Fire: Flareon (Eevee), gift Charmander line, or Vulpix/Ninetales until Cinnabar
Fearow
- Join: Spearow early; Fearow from wild or evolution
- Why: Clean Fly HM carrier with high Speed and Attack
- Alt: Dodrio, Pidgeot, or late Zapdos if Electric/Flying is free
Gengar
- Requirement: Trade Haunter from Pokemon Tower line
- Why: Fast Ghost/Poison Special attacker for Agatha and general sweep
- No-trade note: Haunter still works; do not plan the six around Gengar without a trade partner
Is Pikachu good?
Yes as the Yellow partner: unique dialogue, following sprite, and level-up Thunderbolt. It is not the strongest final Electric - Jolteon and Zapdos outclass it late - but it carries early routes cleanly.
Nidoking guide note
Route 22 Nidoran♂ is the classic Yellow meta pick. Double Kick helps Brock; Moon Stone evolution into Nidoking gives a Poison/Ground tank that eats mid-game trainers.
HM slaves
Fearow (Fly), Lapras or Vaporeon/Gyarados (Surf), a spare Normal for Cut/Strength, and optional Flash on a low-investment mon keep your attackers free. See the Team Planner HM list.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pikachu | Electric | Partner gift at the start | No Raichu via Thunder Stone | Keep early; consider Jolteon/Zapdos later |
| Nidoking | Physical core | Nidoran♂ Routes 22/2 → Moon Stone | Fully single-cart | Best early glue and Brock insurance |
| Vaporeon | Water / Special | Celadon rooftop Eevee + Water Stone | Fully single-cart | Default Water pick in the no-trade six |
| Lapras | Water / Ice / Surf | Silph Co. employee gift | Gift; no trade | Excellent League Ice coverage |
| Gyarados | Water / physical Surf | Magikarp evolve Lv.20 | Fully single-cart | Hyper Beam / Bite physical alternative |
| Kadabra | Psychic | Abra on Routes 5–8 / Game Corner → Kadabra Lv.16 | Stops at Kadabra without trade | Default no-trade Psychic |
| Alakazam | Psychic (trade) | Trade Kadabra | Link trade required | Use only in with-trading mode |
| Hypno | Psychic bulk | Drowzee → Hypno Lv.26 | Fully single-cart | Safer than Kadabra if you hate frets |
| Arcanine | Fire | Pokemon Mansion Growlithe + Fire Stone | Fully single-cart; late Cinnabar join | Default late Fire; use Flareon/Charmander earlier |
| Flareon | Fire physical | Eevee + Fire Stone | Competes with Vaporeon/Jolteon for one Eevee | Only one Eevee gift - choose carefully |
| Jolteon | Electric finisher | Eevee + Thunder Stone | Fully single-cart (Eevee stone works) | Stronger late Electric than partner Pikachu |
| Fearow | Fly / physical | Spearow line / wild Fearow | Fully single-cart | Default HM02 carrier |
| Snorlax | Physical wall | Static on Route 12 or 16 (Pokeflute) | No trade | Elite Four sponge; Body Slam / Rest |
| Haunter | Ghost Special | Pokemon Tower Gastly line | No Gengar without trade | Still usable; Hypnosis / Night Shade |
| Gengar | Ghost (trade) | Trade Haunter | Link trade required | With-trading shell upgrade |
| Machamp | Fighting | Underground Path: trade Cubone for Machoke → auto Machamp | In-game trade, not a second cart | Legal on strict no-link runs |
| Golem | Rock / Ground (trade) | Trade Graveler | Link trade required | Use Rhydon or Nidoking instead no-trade |
| Zapdos | Electric / Fly | Power Plant static | No trade | Late-game Electric upgrade; can carry Fly |
| Starmie | Water / Psychic | Staryu + Water Stone | Fully single-cart | Fast dual role; competes with Vaporeon stone |
| Exeggutor | Grass / Psychic | Exeggcute + Leaf Stone | Fully single-cart | Sleep Powder + Psychic mid/late glue |
| Raichu | Electric (limited) | Thunder Stone on non-partner Pikachu, or trade | Partner Pikachu refuses the stone | Do not plan Raichu from the starter partner |
Trade gates
What a no-trade team cannot finish
These Pokemon only evolve when traded. Planning a "best team" around them without a second cart is the most common trap:
Alakazam
Trade Kadabra. Keep Kadabra on no-trade runs - it already has excellent Speed and Special.
Gengar
Trade Haunter from the Tower line. Haunter remains a valid Ghost slot if you never trade.
Golem
Trade Graveler. Prefer Nidoking or Rhydon for Ground/Rock pressure without trading.
Exception - Machamp: the Underground Path NPC trade (Cubone → Machoke "RICKY") evolves into Machamp immediately. That is an in-game trade, not a link-cable evolution you must arrange yourself.
