First stable fishing

Opening steps for both stories

Finish the first exchange fish before selling extras. That trade is what turns the tutorial into a stable fishing loop.

Kid · Lake

Little brother opening

  1. Start at Lake — equip T.Rod(S), Earthworm, and Hook(S).
  2. Catch a Sucker Eel — Fish Memo name S.Eel.
  3. Trade for the Canoe — give S.Eel to the Lake Inn angler.
  4. Earn the Watch — exchange another Roach for time control.
  5. Open Stream — Pink flower → Tofu → Ogre gate.

Next stage: Stream → Summit (Ogre, Rose, Axe, Carp, and bridge events).

Teen · Beach

Big brother opening

  1. Start at Beach — equip T.Rod(S), Lugworm, and Hook(S).
  2. Catch an Opaleye — shallow water near the Beach entrance works well.
  3. Trade for Small Reel Rod — Surf Rod(S); press B to retrieve the line.
  4. Watch, then Canoe — Sweet Brier → Watch, Dandelion → Canoe.
  5. Open Dad’s boat — Flippers, Pearl Oyster (P.Oyster), hand-in at Shore.

Next stage: Shore → Ocean (Pearl Oyster, Dad’s boat, Scarab, cruiser, and Sea King events).

Shared basics

Fishing rules that never change with the route

Route flavor changes the water and bait. The bite loop does not.

Starter rod behavior

Both routes begin with T.Rod(S). A T.Rod cannot pull the line back on demand—the current moves the bobber. Teen players unlock Surf Rod(S) early for B-button retrieve.

Hook window

Wait through separated circling chimes. Press A only on the continuous tone. During the fight, reel on rests and release on the escape tone.

Do not sell the first exchange fish

Kid keeps the first Sucker Eel for the Canoe. Teen keeps the first Opaleye for the Small Reel Rod. Sell duplicates after that trade is done.

Later kings

River King, Sea King, and Fish King are story-gated on both paths. Use the Sea King & River King guide once your route reaches the late maps.

Kid vs Teen FAQ

Should I play Kid or Teen?

Pick Kid for Lake and Stream/Summit. Pick Teen for Beach, earlier reel control, and a faster coastal/diving push. Neither is “hard mode.”

Is this the little brother / big brother split?

Yes. Fan walkthroughs use those names for Kid and Teen. The in-game labels are Kid and Teen on the route select screen.

Can I change routes later?

No. Start a second save if you want the other opening. Progress and map gates stay on the committed route.

Do I need LotRK 1 first?

No. River King 2 is self-contained. See the worth playing page if you are still deciding on the series.

What if I cannot catch the first fish?

Open the how to catch fish guide. Wrong tone timing or selling the exchange fish are the usual blockers—not the route choice itself.

Where does swimming fit?

Teen needs Flippers and Pearl Oyster for Dad’s boat. Kid can still dive for the Shellfish Memo once Beach is open. Details live in the swimming & diving guide.
