For a normal Crystal playthrough, aim for Flamethrower, ThunderPunch, Earthquake, and Return. Before Flamethrower is realistic, use Flame Wheel or Fire Punch; before level 36, Cyndaquil and Quilava cannot use the punch TMs.

Gen II Rule
Why ThunderPunch belongs on a Fire starter
ThunderPunch is Electric, so it uses Typhlosion's Special Attack in Crystal. Earthquake and Return are physical, but they still solve matchups Fire and Electric do not cover cleanly.

FAQ
Typhlosion moveset questions
Should Typhlosion use Fire Blast or Flamethrower?
Use Flamethrower for the main story and long routes. Use Fire Blast when you want higher burst damage and can accept 85 accuracy and 5 PP.
Is Earthquake worth spending on Typhlosion?
Yes if Typhlosion is your main attacker. Save it if a stronger physical teammate needs TM26 and Typhlosion already has Return or Sunny Day.
Can Quilava use ThunderPunch or Fire Punch?
No. In the Crystal data, those punch TMs are for Typhlosion in this evolution line. Use Flame Wheel, Return, Dig, Headbutt, or Swift until level 36.
