How to beat Clair in Pokemon Gold & Silver

Clair is Johto’s final wall: three Dragonair at Lv.37 with split elemental coverage, then Kingdra at Lv.40. Winning the fight is only half the job—she withholds the Rising Badge until you clear the Dragon’s Den and bring back the Dragon Fang. Same fight in Gold and Silver; not HeartGold/SoulSilver.

Fast answer

Ice the dragons, then switch plan for Kingdra

On the walk through Ice Path, catch Jynx or Swinub and teach real Ice damage. Ice is 2× vs pure Dragon, so the three Dragonair fall fast. Kingdra is Water/Dragon: both Ice and Electric are neutral, while Dragon is its only super-effective weakness in Gen II. Use Dragon damage or your strongest neutral attacker, and pack Full Heals for Thunder Wave. After the win, bring Surf + Whirlpool into Dragon’s Den for the Fang.

Blackthorn Gym fight

Clair’s team

Specialty: Dragon. Fixed battle moves (not pure level-up sets). Clair holds Full Heal and Hyper Potion. Optional Cooltrainers: Lola, Mike, Paul, Cody, Fran (Dratini / Dragonair / Horsea / Seadra lines). Recommended window: Lv.38–41.

Slot 2

Dragonair · Lv.37

Dragon
  • Moves: Thunder Wave, Thunderbolt, Slam, DragonBreath
  • Threat: Electric coverage punishes Water / Flying switch-ins
  • Answer: Keep Ice damage; avoid parking a Water mon if you cannot one-shot

Slot 3

Dragonair · Lv.37

Dragon
  • Moves: Thunder Wave, Ice Beam, Slam, DragonBreath
  • Threat: Ice Beam shreds Grass / Ground / Flying / Dragon mirror attempts
  • Answer: Same Ice plan; do not stall into repeated Wave + Beam

Slot 4 · Ace

Kingdra · Lv.40

Water Dragon
  • Moves: Smokescreen, Surf, Hyper Beam, DragonBreath
  • Threat: Accuracy drops, strong Surf, recharge Hyper Beam, dual typing
  • Answer: Ice and Electric are neutral; Dragon is the only super-effective type, otherwise use strong neutral pressure through Smokescreen turns

Why the wipe happens

Threat kit

Thunder Wave spam

Every Dragonair carries Wave. Paralysis slows your Ice sweeper and invites criticals. Stock Full Heals from Blackthorn Mart or earlier towns before the gym maze.

Coverage triangle

Surf / Thunderbolt / Ice Beam across the three dragons means no single “safe” type wall. Treat each slot as a new matchup even though the species name repeats.

Kingdra typing trap

Ice is famous vs Dragon—but Water resists Ice, so Water/Dragon Kingdra takes 1× Ice. Players who only pack Ice often stall out here while Smokescreen and Surf chip them down.

Items + no badge yet

Clair can Full Heal status and Hyper Potion mid-fight. Even after you win, the Rising Badge is locked until Dragon’s Den—plan PP and heals for a second dungeon immediately after.

Gym Guide text matches the math: dragons are “weak against ice-type moves.” Use that for the Dragonair, then switch plan for Kingdra.

Path A · Ice Path haul

Ice counters on the way in

Jynx

Jynx

Ice / PsychicIce Path grass
  • Appears throughout Ice Path floors (around Lv.20–24 wild).
  • Strong special Ice answer; raise toward the high 30s before Clair.
  • Watch Thunderbolt Dragonair and later Kingdra Surf if you linger.
Swinub

Swinub → Piloswine

Ice / GroundCommon Ice Path
  • Reliable Ice Path catch; evolves into bulkier Piloswine with more Attack.
  • Ground typing dodges Thunderbolt from the second Dragonair.
  • Still vulnerable to Surf and Ice Beam from the other slots—play aggressively.
Lapras

Lapras / Seel lines

Water / IceOptional
  • Lapras appears Fridays only in Union Cave B2F—great if your clock allows a detour earlier.
  • Seel in Whirl Islands if you already hunted Lugia’s caves.
  • Water typing invites Thunderbolt—pair with a second counter.

Also grab on Ice Path

HM07NeverMeltIce
  • HM07 Waterfall item ball on Ice Path 1F—collect now; outdoor use waits for Rising Badge.
  • NeverMeltIce on deeper floors boosts Ice moves if you want a held item.
  • Bring Strength for boulders and the Blackthorn Gym puzzle.

Path B · Ace cleanup

How to finish Kingdra

Ampharos

Neutral special pressure

Electric is 1×Mareep line
  • Ampharos (or Magneton / Lanturn) can still provide strong neutral special damage, but Dragon’s resistance cancels Water’s Electric weakness.
  • Switch in after the last Dragonair falls so Smokescreen does not eat your Ice mon’s PP.
  • Avoid Hyper Beam freeturns if you are at low HP—item or switch.
Dragonair

Dragon mirror

Dragon STABOptional
  • Your own Dragonair / Dragonite / Kingdra can force 2× Dragon into her ace.
  • Dratini can also appear in Dragon’s Den after the fight—only useful here if you already raised one.
  • Still respect Surf and Hyper Beam; Dragon is not a free wall.
Steelix

Bulky support

Steel resistsTrade evo
  • Steelix resists Ice Beam and DragonBreath chip while you reset status.
  • Requires Metal Coat + trade—see the trade evolutions guide.
  • Offense is slow; use it as a pivot, not the sole win condition.

Suggested order

Mahogany → Ice Path → Clair → Den

  1. Clear Team Rocket at Mahogany / Lake of Rage, earn Pryce’s Glacier Badge, and unlock Whirlpool when the story allows.
  2. Optional mascot detour (Ho-Oh / Lugia wings) if you want legendaries before the League—see the legendary guide.
  3. Take Route 44 into Ice Path: grab HM07 Waterfall, catch Jynx / Swinub, push boulders with Strength.
  4. Heal and shop in Blackthorn City; confirm party levels ~38–41 in the Team Planner.
  5. Enter Blackthorn Gym, solve the ice / Strength floors, clear Cooltrainers if you want EXP, then fight Clair.
  6. After the win, Clair still refuses the badge—bring Surf + Whirlpool and immediately start the Dragon’s Den route.
  7. With the Rising Badge, outdoor Waterfall is online for the League approach via New Bark Surf east / Tohjo Falls—see Elite Four & Lance.

Required after the battle

Dragon’s Den · Dragon Fang · Rising Badge

1. Clair refuses the badge

  • Win text is not the badge ceremony. She sends you to the cavern behind the gym.
  • Leaving town without the Fang does not unlock Rising Badge or outdoor Waterfall.

2. Retrieve the Dragon Fang

  • Enter Dragon’s Den with Surf and Whirlpool, cross B1F, and take the Dragon Fang.
  • Original Gold/Silver has no elder quiz; that sequence belongs to later versions.
  • Wild Dratini can appear in the Den if you want a Dragon for the League stretch.

3. Automatic Rising Badge + TM24 scene

  • Picking up the Fang automatically summons Clair and awards the Rising Badge and TM24 DragonBreath; no return conversation is required.
  • Professor Elm’s post-badge gifts (including the Master Ball path after all Johto badges) continue from here—track them on Run Progress.
  • Waterfall field use is now legal wherever a cascade blocks the route.

Trying to soft-skip the Den fails Clair’s check—she calls out a fake Fang. Finish the dungeon for real.

Tips

Common wipe causes

Ice-only party

Works until Kingdra. Keep Dragon damage or a strong neutral attacker healthy; Electric is not super-effective.

Ignoring Thunder Wave

A paralyzed Jynx loses the damage race to Hyper Potion. Full Heal immediately.

Leaving after the win

Without the Rising Badge you cannot use Waterfall outdoors, and the story still requires Dragon’s Den. Finish the Fang trip in the same session if you can.

Underleveled gym maze

Cooltrainers plus Clair’s items punish Lv.30 parties. Grind on Route 44 / Ice Path or gym trainers first.
