Elite Four & Lance guide for Pokemon Gold & Silver

Five consecutive battles with no free exit once you enter a room: WillKogaBrunoKaren → Champion Lance. Parties and moves are identical in Gold and Silver (not HeartGold/SoulSilver). Bring Ice for Lance’s Dragonite and Electric for Gyarados / Charizard, heal fully between rooms, and keep a backup plan when Gengar holds Destiny Bond.

Fast Answer

Ice + Electric + one Dark answer

Stock Full Restores, Full Heals, and status cures for Toxic/paralysis. Core coverage: Ice (or strong special Ice moves) for Lance’s Dragonite line and Karen’s Grass/Flying threats, Electric for Gyarados and Water/Flying, Psychic/Ground into Will and Koga, Flying or Psychic into Bruno, and Fighting or Bug into Karen’s Dark core. Heal at the Indigo Plateau Poké Center before you commit—rooms do not let you freely leave mid-gauntlet.

Before Indigo Plateau

Victory Road path

  1. Finish Blackthorn: beat Clair, clear Dragon’s Den for the Dragon Fang, and claim the Rising Badge.
  2. Travel south through Route 45 / 46 if you still need grinding, then west via Routes 44 → Mahogany → Lake of Rage path as needed; the league approach is Tohjo Falls → Routes 27–26 → Victory Road.
  3. Keep Surf and Waterfall available for the New Bark → Tohjo Falls approach. Original G/S Victory Road needs no Strength, Whirlpool, Cut, or Flash.
  4. Heal and shop before Victory Road. Restock Max Potions / Full Restores / Full Heals / Revives at major cities (Shops tool).
  5. Cross the boulder-free, ordinary-trainer-free Victory Road, collect any items you want, and defeat Rival Silver at the exit before entering Indigo Plateau.
  6. After Lance: hall of fame sequence, then New Bark for the S.S. Ticket and Kanto post-game (Mt. Silver / Red guide).

Team building

Coverage that carries the gauntlet

Jolteon

Electric core

GyaradosXatuCrobat
  • Jolteon, Ampharos, or Magneton with native/TM Electric options such as ThunderPunch or Thunder. Original G/S has no Thunderbolt TM.
  • Deletes Lance’s lead Gyarados and pressures Flying STAB across the set.
Jynx

Ice core

Dragonite ×3Exeggutor
  • Blizzard or Ice Punch from Jynx, Dewgong, Cloyster, or Lapras (Friday Union Cave Lapras). Ice Beam is not a normal TM in original G/S; it requires a Gen I import.
  • 4× vs Dragonite is the cleanest Lance answer in the original games.
Espeon

Psychic / Ground

WillKogaBruno
  • Espeon, Alakazam, or Exeggutor for Will/Bruno; Ground for Koga’s Poison core.
  • Do not lean only on Psychic into Karen—bring Fighting or Bug for Umbreon/Houndoom.
Heracross

Fighting / Flying

Karen DarkBruno
  • Heracross, Machamp, or Primeape crack Karen; Flying walls Bruno’s Hitmons.
  • Keep one healthy Flying mon for Bruno so you enter Karen with items to spare.
Skarmory

Walls & support

StatusHyper Beam turns
  • Skarmory, Steelix, or a bulky Water can absorb Hyper Beam and chip on the recharge turn.
  • Full Restore spam is valid—this is a marathon, not a single gym.
Typhlosion

Starter notes

All three viable
  • Typhlosion burns Exeggutor/Forretress-adjacent bugs; Feraligatr hits Lance neutrally but needs Ice/Electric help; Meganium struggles into Fire/Flying—pair carefully.
  • Use the starter team guide and Team Planner to fill holes.

Tips

Common wipe causes

Entering underleveled

Sub-40 teams face Will fine, then melt on Bruno/Karen. Grind on Victory Road or Route 26/27 before the door.

All-Psychic into Karen

Dark is immune to Psychic. Keep Fighting or Bug for Umbreon and Houndoom after your Psychic core carries Will/Bruno.

Gengar Destiny Bond

If Gengar is low and uses Destiny Bond, do not throw your strongest mon into a mutual KO. Chip with a sacrifice or wait it out.

No Ice for Lance

Neutral special damage can work at high levels, but one Ice user turns three Dragonite into favorable matchups. Use Ice Punch or Blizzard; original G/S has no Ice Beam TM.

FAQ

Quick answers

Is the Elite Four different in Gold vs Silver?

No. Will, Koga, Bruno, Karen, and Lance use the same levels and moves in both versions. Only version exclusives elsewhere in Johto/Kanto differ—see Gold vs Silver differences and the G/S/C comparison.

Can I leave and heal mid-Elite Four?

Once you enter a League member’s room and the battle sequence is underway, you cannot freely retreat to the Poké Center between members the way you can between outdoor trainers. Heal fully at Indigo Plateau before starting, and use items between Pokémon inside each fight.

What level is Lance’s strongest Pokémon?

The ace Dragonite is level 50 with Fire Blast, Safeguard, Outrage, and Hyper Beam. The rest of the team spans levels 44–47.

What do I do after becoming Champion?

Return to New Bark Town for the S.S. Ticket, sail the S.S. Aqua to Kanto, earn eight Kanto badges, then unlock Mt. Silver and Red. Full path: Mt. Silver and Red guide.
