Pokemon Gold vs Silver vs Crystal

Pick a cart before you start Johto. Gold and Silver are the same adventure with swapped exclusives and box legendaries. Crystal is the polished third release with a Suicune focus, Battle Tower, Move Tutor, and more—but it is not a full Gold + Silver package and needs Game Boy Color hardware (or a compatible emulator).

Fast answer

Crystal for most players

Start with Crystal if you want one best original Johto playthrough. Choose Gold if you want Ho-Oh early and Gold exclusives like Growlithe / Spinarak / Gligar. Choose Silver for early Lugia and Silver exclusives like Vulpix / Skarmory / Phanpy. Plan trades with the Trade Planner either way—no Gen 2 cart is a full National Dex alone.

Gold vs Silver exclusives

Decision rules

Play Gold / Silver / Crystal if…

Play Gold if…

You want Ho-Oh first, Fire Stone Growlithe, night Spinarak vibes, Gligar, or the gold box art identity on original hardware.

Play Silver if…

You want Lugia first, Vulpix/Ninetales, Skarmory, Phanpy, or the silver box art path with the same story structure.

Play Crystal if…

You want the richest single original Johto cart: Suicune story, Battle Tower, Move Tutor, animations, and modern “definitive” recommendations.

Play two carts if…

You care about version exclusives, trade evolutions, or a living dex. Pair G↔S or Crystal + a trade partner via the Trade Planner.

After you pick

Recommended next steps on this site

  2. Lock a starter plan with the best starter guide and Team Planner.
  3. Follow the walkthrough; clear Whitney with the Miltank guide.

  6. Swap missing exclusives in the Trade Planner and log catches in the catch checklist.

Common mistakes

Avoid these version traps

Thinking Crystal has every exclusive

Crystal is enhanced, not complete. Mareep and other lines still force trades. Check availability before you commit a nuzlocke or monotype.

Confusing G/S with HeartGold/SoulSilver

Remakes add following Pokémon, different level curves, and Pokéwalker-era extras. This hub is original GBC Gold and Silver.

Ignoring the second legendary

Gold and Silver both can obtain Ho-Oh and Lugia; the early one is Lv.40 and the opposite is Lv.70. See the legendary hub for wings and maps.

Skipping RTC setup

Day/night encounters, friendship evolutions, and weekday events all need a real-time clock. Emulators must enable RTC.
