Original Gold & Silver vs HeartGold & SoulSilver

Choose between the 1999–2000 Game Boy Color originals and the Nintendo DS remakes before you start Johto. This tool covers that fork—not Gold vs Silver vs Crystal (use the sibling picker for that). Use the matrix, exclusives, and legendary snapshot below to decide, then jump into this site’s original G/S tools.

Fast answer

Pick by what you actually want

Original Gold / Silver / Crystal if you want the GBC experience, Gen 2 battles, Time Capsule with Red/Blue/Yellow, shorter sessions, and every tool on this site. HeartGold / SoulSilver if you want following Pokémon, Gen 4 mechanics, Pokéwalker, Pal Park migration from Gen III on compatible DS hardware, and remake post-game. If you only care about “one best original Johto cart,” start with Crystal vs G/S, not the remakes.

Name check: many “Gold” guides online are actually HeartGold. Everything in this section means original Game Boy Color unless a remake is named.

What G/S actually place on the map

Remake note: HGSS legendary quests, levels, and Kanto mythicals are not the same scripts. Use remake-specific guides for those. Original G/S never spawn overworld Mewtwo—see the dex requirements tool.

FAQ

Common remake vs original questions

Is HGSS “just Gold with better graphics”?

No. Mechanics generation, side systems, legendary routing, and many encounter tables change. Treat remakes as related games, not skin swaps.

Should beginners start on remakes?

Often yes for comfort (followers, Gen 4 rules). Start on originals if you specifically want Gen 2, Time Capsule, or this site’s GBC toolkit.

Where does Crystal fit?

Crystal is the polished original-era third version. It is still GBC/Gen 2—not a DS remake. Pair this page with the Gold vs Silver vs Crystal tool.

Can I follow an HGSS walkthrough on Gold?

Not safely. Levels, item locations, and quest order diverge. Use the original walkthrough and stuck-point guides on this site.

Phone, swarms, and day events

Original G/S expose a 10-slot Pokégear phone book, rematches, and swarm callers documented under Mechanics and the week calendar.

Battery and RTC

Original carts need a live clock for day/night and weekly events. See RTC / time change for emulator and VC-era notes.
