Complete Pokédex requirements

Original Pokemon Gold and Silver list 251 National Dex entries. No single cartridge holds every source: you combine shared catches, version exclusives, link trades (including return trade evolutions), Time Capsule imports from Generation I, and two event mythical slots. This page maps every gap and hooks into the site’s Catch checklist, Trade Planner, Pokédex, and map tools.

Fast answer

No cart is enough alone

Your chosen version has a native source pool of about 222 species, but one unassisted save cannot realize all of it: the two unchosen Johto starter lines remove 6 entries and the 10 communication evolutions require trading, leaving an approximate no-trade ceiling of 206. The game awards its diploma at 249 caught species, explicitly ignoring Mew and Celebi; a true living dex still targets 251.

How 251 breaks down

212Obtainable on both Gold and Silver (wild, gift, evolution, special encounter, or in-game NPC trade such as Aerodactyl).
+10Gold only families: Mankey line, Growlithe line, Spinarak line, Gligar, Teddiursa line, Mantine.
+10Silver only families: Vulpix line, Meowth line, Ledyba line, Delibird, Skarmory, Phanpy line.
+19Neither cart: Kanto starter lines, Helix/Dome fossils, Articuno / Zapdos / Moltres / Mewtwo, Mew, Celebi.
=251Full National Dex. Johto starters are three mutually exclusive families on one save—count the other two as trade/second-save work, not as “missing from the ROM.”

Version exclusive · Gold

Gold exclusive Pokémon

Silver players must trade for these ten. Evolved forms count once you have the base mon and the right stone/level.

Version exclusive · Silver

Silver exclusive Pokémon

Gold players trade for these ten. Fire Stone evolves Vulpix; Meowth/Ledyba/Phanpy lines level normally.

Generation I transfer

Time Capsule & the 19 external entries

When the Time Capsule unlocks

Meet Bill in Ecruteak’s Pokémon Center, wait one RTC day for the daily adjustment flag to clear, then use any Center’s 2F Time Capsule receptionist. Trades talk to Red / Blue / Yellow under Gen 1 species and move rules—strip Gen 2-only moves and mail first if a mon is rejected. Full unlock, compatibility checker, and import list: Time Capsule guide.

What still never appears on G/S maps

Original Gold, Silver, and Crystal have no normal wild or gift source for the legendary birds or Mewtwo. Import those four from Generation I through the Time Capsule. Fossils here mean Helix/Dome only—Aerodactyl is an in-game NPC trade on Route 14.

Trading with Crystal

  • Gold/Silver ↔ Crystal link trades work for version exclusives and trade evolutions.
  • Crystal adds story paths (Suicune, move tutor later) but is a different cart for exclusives—see the comparison post.
  • Time Capsule is still required for true Gen 1-only rows either way.

FAQ

Common completion questions

Is the Pokédex 151 or 251?

The in-game New Pokédex focuses on Johto, but the full National list in Gen 2 data is 251 species (everything through Celebi). Completionists usually mean National 251.

Do I need HeartGold/SoulSilver?

No. This page is for original Game Boy Color Gold/Silver. HGSS remakes change availability, Pokéwalker, and post-game—do not mix guides.

Can Mewtwo be caught in Gold/Silver?

Not on the original G/S overworld, and Crystal does not add it either. Import Mewtwo via the Time Capsule from Generation I.

What about the legendary birds?

Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres are not placed as catchable legendaries in original Gold, Silver, or Crystal. Import them from Generation I.

How do I get Gen 1 starters?

Time Capsule trade from Red, Blue, or Yellow after the capsule unlocks. There is no Elm/Oak gift for Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle on G/S carts.

What count earns the diploma?

The diploma check is 249 caught species; it deliberately ignores Mew and Celebi. A 251 target is a collector’s living-dex goal, not the in-game diploma requirement.

Does Unown break the 251 count?

Unown is one Pokédex number with many forms. National 251 treats Unown as a single species; form collectors still want the Ruins of Alph set.
