Best team for Pokemon Gold & Silver
Build a no-trade Johto six, an endgame E4 / Red core, or a type-coverage party for original Gold and Silver—not HeartGold or SoulSilver. Presets open into Team Planner, Gyms, Pokédex, and the live map.
Fast answer
Six slots that clear both regions
For most casual runs: your starter final form, Ampharos (Mareep on Route 32), Gyarados or Feraligatr, Heracross (Headbutt), Graveler (Geodude line), and Espeon or Xatu. That spread answers Johto gyms, the Elite Four, and Red without link trades or legendaries; Golem itself requires trading Graveler. In Generation II, Water-type moves are special even on high-Attack users. Use the filters below for starter-specific, early-game, trade-evo, or legendary-friendly variants—then open Team Planner to assign four moves and HM coverage.

FAQ
Common team questions
Is there one best team?
No. Coverage and availability matter more than a fixed meta. The presets above are proven no-trade shapes; customize with underrated picks or trades if you can link.
Best early-game team?
Starter + Geodude + Mareep covers Falkner, Bugsy, and sets Electric for later. Add Gastly before Ecruteak and a Fighting answer before Whitney.
Best endgame team for Red?
Bring Fighting for Snorlax, Electric or Grass for Blastoise, Fire or Ice for Venusaur, and reliable answers to Pikachu, Espeon, and Charizard. Red does not use Gyarados, Lapras, or Dragonite. See the Mt. Silver Red guide.
Gold vs Silver team differences?
Fire and Ground exclusives shift: Growlithe/Arcanine and Mankey on Gold; Vulpix/Ninetales, Meowth, and Phanpy/Donphan lean Silver. Use the version toggle and version differences.
