How to get Lapras (Union Cave Friday)
Original Pokémon Gold & Silver place a single Lv.20 Lapras on Union Cave B2F every Friday. Bring Surf, save before the swim sprite, and catch a Water/Ice tank with catch rate 45. This page is for the original Game Boy Color games—not HeartGold/SoulSilver—and links the live map, weekday calendar, Pokédex, catch checklist, and walkthrough.
Fast answer
Friday → B2F → Surf → catch
Unlock HM03 Surf (Kimono Girls, Ecruteak) and the Fog Badge (Morty). On any Friday, enter Union Cave from Route 32 or Route 33, go 1F → B1F → B2F, Surf the lower water, and talk to the blue swimming sprite at (11, 31).
Battle facts: Lapras Lv.20, types Water/Ice, catch rate 45. Catching or defeating it sets a daily engine flag so it vanishes for the rest of that day; after the day rolls, it can show again on a later Friday.
Browser weekday helper
Is it Friday for your real clock?
The game uses its own RTC weekday (set at the start with Mom/Elm). This helper only mirrors your device clock so you can plan when to boot the cart if your save tracks real time.

In-game reminder
Save weekdayLapras only loads when your cartridge weekday is Friday and you have not already battled it that day.
How to get there
Route 32 → Union Cave → B2F
1. Requirements
- HM03 Surf from the Kimono Girls in Ecruteak after the Dance Theater sequence.
- Fog Badge from Morty so outdoor Surf works.
- Access to Union Cave (unlocked early via Route 32 south of Violet / Route 33 west of Azalea).
- Balls: Great / Ultra stack; rate 45 is friendly compared with legendaries (rate 3).
2. Travel path
- From Violet, go south on Route 32 (Pokémon Center mid-route) into the north cave mouth, or from Azalea west on Route 33 into the south mouth.
- On Union Cave 1F, take stairs down to B1F.
- On B1F, reach the stairs to B2F (south-east connector warp).
- On B2F, Surf the water and find the swimming Lapras sprite.
3. Object & trainers
- Overworld object at tile (11, 31) — a swimming Surf sprite that wanders on the water.
- B2F also holds Cooltrainer Nick / Gwen / Emma plus Elixer and Hyper Potion item balls—clear trainers if you need space to set up.
- Optional: B1F connects to Ruins of Alph exits if you are combining Unown runs; see the Ruins of Alph guide.
Route 32
North approach from Violet with a mid-route Pokémon Center.
Union Cave 1F
Surface floor between Route 32 and Route 33; stairs lead deeper.
Union Cave B1F
Mid floor; take the B2F stairs after routing past wilds.
Union Cave B2F
Surf water; Lapras appears Friday at the swim object.
RTC rules
Why only Friday—and why it comes back
Appearance rules
- Union Cave B2F checks the save’s weekday when the map loads.
- If the day is Friday and you have not already battled Lapras that day → the swimming sprite appears.
- Any other weekday → the sprite stays hidden.
After the battle
- Talking to the sprite starts a wild battle with Lapras Lv.20, then the object disappears.
- The game marks Lapras as “done for today” with a daily flag.
- When the real-time clock rolls a new day, that flag clears—so a later Friday can load Lapras again.
Clock planning
- Original G/S set the clock once early; there is no free mid-game clock menu.
- Emulators with RTC should keep the weekday continuous if you want natural Fridays.
- Cross-check other Friday content (Frieda of Friday, ship schedules after Kanto unlock) on the days-of-the-week calendar.

Catch the Lv.20 Water/Ice Lapras
Static encounter
Lapras
- Level: 20
- Catch rate: 45
- Base stats: 130 / 85 / 80 / 60 / 85 / 95 (HP–SpD), total 535
- Base EXP: 219 · growth Slow
- Location: Union Cave B2F water sprite
- Versions: same special source on Gold and Silver
Actual moves at the Lv.20 encounter
A generated wild Pokémon keeps only its latest four level-up moves. Water Gun is the oldest of Lapras's five entries through Lv.20, so the Friday encounter does not retain it:
Watch Sing sleep turns and Body Slam paralysis. Grass and Electric hit Water/Ice hard if you fight to KO.
Catch plan
- Save on a land tile before interacting.
- Chip to red HP with low-power moves; status (Sleep / Paralysis) helps Gen 2 catch math.
- Sing can put your lead to sleep—bring a secondary switch or full status cures.
- Great Balls work well at this level and rate; Ultra Balls if you are impatient.
- Master Ball is better saved for roamers or mascot legendaries—see the legendary hub.
Why not wild grass?
Lapras has no wild encounter table rows in Gold/Silver. The only in-game source is this Friday static script on B2F (plus trades).
Vs Red Gyarados
Lake of Rage is a one-time story shiny with a Red Scale reward. Lapras is a soft weekly special—use both pages when building a mid-game Water core.
Mark progress
Tick Lapras on the catch checklist and open the Pokédex entry for full TM/HM coverage (Surf, Ice Beam path, etc.).
Playthrough value
Where Lapras fits your run
Strengths
- 130 HP bulk plus later Surf / Ice Beam / Body Slam coverage.
- Available before late Johto if you already have Surf for coastal routes.
- Water/Ice hits Dragon and Flying gyms / E4 pieces cleanly once leveled.
Timing notes
- Unlocking Surf is after Morty / Ecruteak—plan a Friday trip when your clock allows.
- At Lv.20 it needs EXP investment before Clair / E4; pair with Exp.Share from the Red Scale trade if available.
- Compare with Feraligatr / Gyarados / Quagsire on the Team Planner for Water slots.
Learnset highlights
- Lv.22 Confuse Ray, Lv.29 Perish Song, Lv.36 Ice Beam, Lv.43 Rain Dance, Lv.57 Hydro Pump.

Quick FAQ
Common Lapras questions
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Gold and Silver the same? | Yes—same Friday callback, Lv.20, catch rate, and map coordinates on both cartridges. |
| Can I get Lapras before Surf? | No. The object is a swimming Surf sprite on B2F water; you must teach and use Surf with the Fog Badge. |
| Does it vanish forever if I KO it? | No. Only the daily Lapras flag is set. After the day changes, a later Friday can spawn it again. |
| Is this the only Lapras source? | On original G/S there is no wild grass/surf table for Lapras—this static Friday script is the in-game encounter. Trades are the alternative. |
| HeartGold / SoulSilver? | Remakes change presentation and some encounter framing. This page covers original GBC Gold/Silver only. |
| What about Crystal? | Crystal keeps a Friday Union Cave Lapras tradition but is a separate title—use Crystal tools when playing that cart. |
