The Pool of Rain (W3) opens after the Jar rainstorm links the western waterways. Use the finder below for every Gray, Red, Green, and Blue chest, all eight Musical Coins, and the Wolfenboss arena—with exact room-map links for Day/Night and each map variant. First priority is the Gray Chest Gear 1, which pairs with Gear 2 to open the South map.
FIRST CLEAR PRIORITY
Open the Gray Chest for Gear 1, then pair it with Gear 2
Carry the Gray Key to the Gray Chest and take Gear 1. Combined with Gear 2 from W4 A Town in Chaos (Gray Chest), the elevator pair opens S1 The Grasslands and the South overworld. Come back later for the Blue Skull Ring, Ornamental Fan, Yellow Crayon, Musical Coins, and Wolfenboss.

BOSS · THE POOL OF RAIN
How to beat Wolfenboss
Wolfenboss
Wolf boss for W3 The Pool of Rain. The arena is in rooms 9 and 19 on the default Day map—the same area family as the Green Chest route—and uses a dedicated solid platform object.
Wolfenboss rises from a wisp or smoke entrance, alternates movement and magic over the platform, can vanish into smoke before re-entering, and falls out of the arena after the final hit. Focus on safe windows between magic and re-entry, not on chasing every disappearance.

Wisp entrance
Wolfenboss begins as a rising wisp and emerges from smoke onto its solid platform.
Main attack loop
It alternates movement and magic attacks. Hit during safe movement windows; dodge magic pressure.
Smoke exit & defeat
It can disappear into smoke before re-entering. After the final hit, Wolfenboss falls out of the arena.
WEST RAIN ROUTE
How The Pool of Rain fits the mid-game path
Unlock W3
Collect the Jar from N1 Out of the Woods (Red Chest). The rainstorm connects W2 The Volcano’s Base to W3 The Pool of Rain and W4 A Town in Chaos.
Gear 1 + Gear 2
Grab W3 Gear 1 and W4 Gear 2 (order flexible once both levels are open). Together they open S1 The Grasslands and the South overworld elevator.
Skull rings & fan
Blue Skull Ring pairs with N3 Red Skull Ring for S3 Tower of Revival. Ornamental Fan later clears mist from the Tower to E1 The Stagnant Swamp.
MAP VARIANTS · DAY & NIGHT
When The Pool of Rain layout changes
W3 has four progression variants on both Day and Night. Variant 1 is available once the Jar rainstorm opens the level. Later variants open after you collect specific treasures elsewhere:
| Variant | Requirements | Notes | Map |
|---|---|---|---|
| V1 | None (level open via Jar rainstorm) | Default first visit. Grab Gear 1 here. | Open Day map |
| V2 | Magic Seeds (S2 Gray Chest) | Seed-linked layout for deeper W3 revisits. | Open Day map |
| V3 | Swimming Flippers (S3 Gray Chest) | Swim ability opens extra water routes inside W3. | Open Day map |
| V4 | Air Pump (E4 Red Chest) | Late layout for Yellow Crayon and remaining clean-up. | Open Day map |
FIRST VISIT ROUTE
What to do in The Pool of Rain on the first clear
Enter from the West waterways
After the Jar rainstorm, walk the western water path into W3. You can visit W3 and W4 in either order once both are open from W2.
Gray Key → Gear 1
Hunt the Gray Key in the rain-pool room family (rooms 0, 7, 10, 20–25, 28), open the Gray Chest in room 5, leave with Gear 1, and pair it with Gear 2 for South.
Revisit W3 later
Come back for Blue Skull Ring, Ornamental Fan, Yellow Crayon, Musical Coins, and Wolfenboss when Magic Seeds, Swimming Flippers, or Air Pump unlock remaining rooms.
FAQ
The Pool of Rain FAQ
How do you unlock The Pool of Rain?
Collect the Jar from the Red Chest in N1 Out of the Woods. That rainstorm overworld event connects W2 The Volcano’s Base to W3 The Pool of Rain and W4 A Town in Chaos.
How do I open the Gray / Grey Chest in The Pool of Rain?
Find the matching Gray Key in the rain-pool room set (rooms 0, 7, 10, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, or 28 depending on map state), carry it to the Gray Chest in room 5, and open it for Gear 1.
What does Gear 1 do in Wario Land 3?
Gear 1 pairs with Gear 2 from W4 A Town in Chaos (Gray Chest). Together they open S1 The Grasslands and the South overworld elevator—an essential mid-game route after West progress begins.
What does the Blue Skull Ring do?
It pairs with the Red Skull Ring from N3 The Vast Plain (Green Chest). Collect both to raise S3 Tower of Revival beyond The Big Bridge. One ring alone does not open the tower.
What does the Ornamental Fan do?
It blows away the eastern mist and connects the Tower of Revival to E1 The Stagnant Swamp. Grab it when you are ready to push East after the tower is raised.
Where is the Yellow Crayon and is golf required?
Yellow Crayon is the Blue Chest treasure in room 14, indexed on Day Variant 4 after Air Pump. It is one of seven crayons that color the Golf Building. Golf is optional for the main ending and Perfect treasure screen.
How many Musical Coins are in The Pool of Rain?
Eight—the same as every other level. Use the coin table above or the full Musical Coins Finder if you are missing one for 100% side goals.
How do you beat Wolfenboss?
Enter the boss arena in rooms 9 or 19. Wolfenboss rises from wisp or smoke onto its platform, uses magic and re-entry loops, and falls out after the final hit. Strike during safe movement windows rather than chasing every smoke exit.
Is The Pool of Rain required for the ending?
Gear 1 is an important mid-game route item for South access with Gear 2. Blue Skull Ring and Ornamental Fan support Tower and East progression. Yellow Crayon and Musical Coins support golf and 100% side goals rather than the five Music Box temple ending set itself.
