How to get to Cianwood City
Cianwood sits west across the sea from Olivine. In original Game Boy Color Gold & Silver (not HeartGold/SoulSilver) there is no land route—you need outdoor Surf, a Water user, and a clear path over Route 40 and Route 41. This page covers the full mid-Johto loop: Fog Badge → Olivine Lighthouse → sea crossing → Secretpotion → Chuck → HM02 Fly → return for Jasmine.
Fast answer
One-sentence route
Fog Badge + Surf → Olivine west shore → Route 40 → Route 41 → Cianwood Pharmacy (Secretpotion) → Strength gym → Chuck → wife gives Fly. Typical level band Lv.25–31 for the sea and gym. Bring a Water mon that already knows Surf, stock Super Potions for Tentacool lines, and grab HM04 Strength in Olivine Cafe before Chuck’s boulder maze.
Before you leave Ecruteak
Prerequisites
Must-have flags
- Beat all five Kimono Girls in the Dance Theater for HM03 Surf. The gift does not directly require the Burned Tower Rival scene.
- Defeat Morty for the Fog Badge—badge text enables outdoor Surf on water tiles.
- Teach Surf to a party mon. Friday Lapras is a static wild catch in Union Cave—not a later gift—and is available once you can reach its Surf route; Totodile line and Krabby/Kingler are other options.
- Optional but smart: earn Whitney’s Plain Badge earlier so outdoor Strength works the moment you pick up HM04 in Olivine.
Prep checklist
- Heal in Ecruteak or Olivine before the open water stretch.
- Pack Super Potions / Antidotes—Route 40/41 Surf fights are mostly Tentacool / Tentacruel.
- Leave a moveslot free for Strength if your HM mule is full.
- Use Team Planner for Fighting coverage before Chuck (Primeape + Poliwrath).
| Requirement | Where | Why it matters | Tool |
|---|---|---|---|
| HM03 Surf | Ecruteak Dance Theater | Disk to teach the field move | Map pin · HM guide |
| Fog Badge | Morty · Ecruteak Gym | Outdoor Surf gate + obey to Lv.50 | Gym tool |
| HM04 Strength | Olivine Cafe sailor | Chuck gym boulders | Map pin |
| Plain Badge | Whitney · Goldenrod | Outdoor Strength gate | Whitney guide |
Do this in order
Full Cianwood path
- Ecruteak setup. Kimono Girls → Surf, Morty → Fog Badge. Burned Tower matters indirectly for reaching Morty’s normal story state, but it is not checked by the Dance Theater Surf gift itself.
- Routes 38–39 to Olivine. West from Ecruteak through the farm routes. Optional Moomoo Farm side content; trainers scale below Chuck.
- Olivine hub. Poké Center, Mart, free HM04 Strength in the Cafe. Climb Olivine Lighthouse to 6F and talk to Jasmine about sick Amphy—this unlocks the Secretpotion gift in Cianwood.
- Surf west. From Olivine’s western water, Surf onto Route 40, continue into Route 41 (Whirl Islands in the center—you can ignore them for now), and land on Cianwood’s east beach.
- Pharmacy first. Enter Cianwood Pharmacy and receive the Secretpotion (story gift, not a purchase).
- Chuck gym. Teach Strength, push boulders, clear Blackbelts, beat Chuck for Storm Badge + TM01 DynamicPunch.
- Fly unlock. Talk to Chuck’s wife outside the gym for HM02 Fly. Teach it and use outdoor Fly once Storm Badge is set.
- Return loop. Fly or Surf back to Olivine, give the Secretpotion to Jasmine on Lighthouse 6F, then challenge Jasmine for the Mineral Badge.

Route 40 & Route 41 Surf path
Olivine launch
Route 40
Route 41 → Cianwood
| Route | Water encounters (Surf) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Route 40 | Tentacool Lv.15–20, Tentacruel Lv.20 | 6% encounter rate · same in Gold & Silver |
| Route 41 | Gold: Tentacool, Tentacruel, Mantine Lv.20 Silver: Tentacool / Tentacruel only (no Mantine slot) | Whirl Islands in the center need Whirlpool later—not required for Cianwood |
Don’t dive Whirl Islands yet
You can circle the islands, but caves need HM06 Whirlpool from the later Mahogany Rocket Hideout plus Glacier Badge for outdoor use. Cianwood does not require entering the caves.
Mantine is Gold-only here
Original Silver’s Route 41 water table skips Mantine. Plan version trades via the Trade Planner if you need it for the dex.
Repels optional
Repels speed the crossing if your lead is high enough. Otherwise farm Tentacruel for Water coverage before Chuck’s Poliwrath.

Story gift
Secretpotion · Pharmacy
After Jasmine flags Amphy’s sickness on Olivine Lighthouse 6F, the pharmacist gives a free Secretpotion (map pin cianwoodpharmacy-5). It fully heals any Pokémon in description text, but its story job is curing Amphy so Jasmine returns to her gym.
- No purchase cost—talk while the Lighthouse errand is active.
- Keep it until you return to Lighthouse 6F; Jasmine takes the item in a cutscene.
- Pair with walkthrough step Heal Amphy and challenge Jasmine.
Town services
Center, gym, side NPCs
- Poké Center — heal after the long Surf and before Chuck.
- Gym — Fighting theme; Strength boulders block paths to Chuck.
- Chuck’s wife (outside gym, city map marker) — only hands over Fly after you defeat Chuck.
- Photo studio / Lugia speech house are optional flavor, not required for progress.
- Entering the city sets the Cianwood Fly point for later outdoor Fly.

How to beat Chuck
Cianwood Gym · Fighting
Chuck · Storm Badge
TM01 DynamicPunch · outdoor Fly unlock
Primeape · 27
- Leer · Rage · Karate Chop · Fury Swipes
- Psychic or Flying pressure shreds it; Fairy type does not exist in Gen II

- Hypnosis · Mind Reader · Surf · DynamicPunch
- Electric or Grass preferred; watch confusion + sleep
- Badge: Storm Badge — obey up to Lv.70 (including trades) and outdoor Fly.
- Reward TM: TM01 DynamicPunch (high confusion chance, imperfect accuracy).
- Strength boulders sit throughout the gym; teach HM04 before you enter the maze.

Exact parties and moves match the live Gym and Trainers tools.
Counters that travel well
- Haunter/Gengar or other Psychic damage for pure Fighting
- Flying STAB (Pidgeotto, Noctowl, Fearow) into Primeape / Hitmons
- Electric (Ampharos after Jasmine, or Magnemite) for Poliwrath
- Avoid pure Normal walls into Karate Chop / DynamicPunch
Reward loop
HM02 Fly & return to Olivine
Chuck’s wife
Claim HM02 after the badge
- Beat Chuck and collect the Storm Badge fanfare.
- Exit the gym and talk to his wife on the city overworld (marker cianwoodcity-23).
- Receive HM02 Fly (Flying · Power 70 · Acc 95 · PP 15).
- Teach Fly; outdoor use requires the
Storm Badge.
She refuses to hand over Fly until Chuck is beaten—beating him is the hard gate, not a second fetch quest.
Story continuation
Secretpotion → Jasmine
- Fly (or Surf) back to Olivine.
- Climb Lighthouse to 6F, deliver the Secretpotion, watch Amphy recover.
- Olivine Gym opens—Jasmine leads Magnemite ×2 (30) and Steelix (35).
- Mineral Badge + TM23 Iron Tail complete the mid-Johto coastal pair.

FAQ
Why can’t I leave Olivine toward Cianwood?
There is no walking path. Face a west-shore water tile and use Surf from the field menu. If the option is missing, recheck Fog Badge + taught Surf.
Pharmacy won’t give the Secretpotion.
Visit Jasmine on Lighthouse 6F first so Amphy’s sickness event is set. Then return to Cianwood Pharmacy and talk to the counter NPC.
Chuck’s wife only talks about beating Chuck.
Beat the gym leader completely (badge fanfare). Then speak to her outside—HM02 is a post-victory gift, not a pre-gym hint item.
Is this the same as HeartGold/SoulSilver?
No. Remakes add different coastal routing and side content. Levels, maps, and item rewards here match original GBC Gold and Silver.
Can I do Chuck before the Lighthouse?
You can Surf to Cianwood and fight Chuck without the Secretpotion, but Jasmine’s gym stays closed until Amphy is healed. Standard order is Lighthouse talk → Cianwood medicine → Chuck → return.
Where do I go after Cianwood?
Heal Amphy, beat Jasmine, then continue the Johto arc toward Lake of Rage / Mahogany (see Red Gyarados and the full walkthrough).
