Fast Answer

Yellow hurts early and at Koga

Lock nicknames + permadeath + first wild encounter per area. Decide Pikachu clause and gift clause before Route 1. Cap to the next gym’s highest level mon. Yellow’s pain points: Brock with Pikachu, Lt. Surge’s solo Raichu 28, then a brutal jump to Koga’s level 44–50 Venonat line and Sabrina’s level 50 Psychics.

What is an “area”?

Usually each named route, each cave floor, Safari Zone wings, and separate buildings only if they have their own wild table. Use map names from the encounter browser below.

Failed encounters

If the first mon flees or you KO it by accident, standard rules say the area is empty. House-rule “knockout re-roll” if you want a friendlier run.

Randomizer Nuzlocke

Same death rules apply, but this page’s encounter tables only match vanilla Yellow. Use your randomizer log for species and keep these level caps.

Hardcore caps

Yellow gym level caps

Cap = highest level on the gym leader’s team in Pokémon Yellow. Train to the cap, then fight.

Yellow gym threats for Nuzlocke

Brock — cap 12

Partner Pikachu is weak into Rock/Ground. Prioritize Route 22 Mankey or Nidoran, with Butterfree as another legal early option. The Route 24 Charmander gift is only available after Brock, Mt. Moon, and Nugget Bridge, so it cannot solve this fight.

Lt. Surge — cap 28

Single Raichu 28 with Thunderbolt. Ground types (Diglett line, Sandshrew, Nidoking) or a bulky Grass from gift Bulbasaur save runs.

Koga — cap 50

Yellow’s infamous spike: Venonat 44/46/48 + Venomoth 50 with Toxic spam. Underleveled mid-game teams die here. Budget training before Fuchsia.

Sabrina — cap 50

Abra / Kadabra / Alakazam are all level 50. Dark does not exist yet, useful Bug attacks are scarce, and Ghost attacks do no damage to Psychic in Yellow. Use fast physical attackers, paralysis, sleep, and reliable neutral damage; do not walk in at level 40.

FAQ

Nuzlocke questions

What are the basic Pokemon Yellow Nuzlocke rules?

Nickname catches, permadeath on faint, and only the first wild encounter in each area. Add hardcore level caps and no in-battle items if you want the modern YouTube ruleset.

Should I keep partner Pikachu?

With Pikachu clause, yes—it is the identity of Yellow. Without the clause, some runners box it after a failed early fight. Thunderbolt at 26 helps later Electric cores.

Why is Koga so high level in Yellow?

Yellow remixed several gyms. Koga’s team tops out at 50, far above Erika’s 32. Treat the Koga gap like a second mid-game wall.

Can I Nuzlocke with a randomizer?

Yes. Keep death and nickname rules; replace this page’s encounter lists with your seed log. Level caps and boss notes still apply to Yellow trainers.

Only Pikachu challenge vs Nuzlocke?

Only-Pikachu is a different restriction run. You can combine them (permadeath on Pikachu ends the run), but that is much harder than a normal Nuzlocke.
