Does Pikachu evolve in Pokemon Yellow?
No — not your partner. The starter Pikachu refuses a Thunder Stone and stays Pikachu for the whole single-cart story. Happiness still matters (Bulbasaur at 147), it follows you on the overworld, learns Thunderbolt at level 26, and can enter the Surfing Pikachu beach minigame.

Partner refuses the stone
When you use a Thunder Stone on the starter partner, Yellow plays a refusal cry, shows a refusal line, and keeps Pikachu as Pikachu. There is no wild Pikachu on this cartridge, so a normal single-player run never evolves the partner. A traded non-partner Pikachu can still become Raichu. For stronger Electric later without trading, use Jolteon (Celadon Eevee + Thunderstone) or Zapdos.

Partner happiness starts at 90. Melanie offers Bulbasaur only at 147+. Values sit in three change bands: under 100, 100–199, and 200+. The same action can give a different delta depending on the current band.

Should you keep Pikachu in the party?
Follow sprite + bond gains
Yes for most story runs. The partner can follow behind you when it is in the party, reacts in Yellow-only scenes, and keeps receiving walking and gym happiness. Parking it in a PC removes the follow sprite and costs happiness on deposit.

Yellow’s exclusive beach minigame lives in the Summer Beach House on Route 19. Classic rule: a starter-species Pikachu that knows Surf. On 3DS Virtual Console, the starter can enter without Surf. Stunt scores reward flip chains (single flip 50 → mixed triple chain 500).

Partner Pikachu
Best early Electric. Thunderbolt at 26 makes it more than a mascot. Keep it for Erika, Koga support, and mid-game water cores.
Jolteon
Celadon rooftop Eevee + Thunderstone from Mart 4F. Faster special attacker if you retire Pikachu late.
Zapdos

Common Pikachu questions
Does Pikachu evolve in Pokemon Yellow?
Partner Pikachu does not. It refuses the Thunder Stone. You keep Pikachu unless you trade for a different mon’s evolution path.
Why won’t my Pikachu evolve with a Thunder Stone?
Yellow tags the starter as the partner. Stone use on that mon always refuses. The stone path still exists for a non-partner Pikachu obtained by trading.
How do I make Pikachu happy for Bulbasaur?
Start from 90, avoid deposits and repeated faints, and stack level-ups, healing items, walks, and gym challenges until you hit 147. Use the live meter above or the full Happiness Lab.
Does Pikachu follow you?
Yes — when the partner is in the party, Yellow can spawn the following overworld Pikachu. Depositing it or losing the partner slot removes that behavior.
Is Surfing Pikachu a permanent form?
No permanent species change. Surf on Pikachu changes the overworld swim sprite / music path, and the beach house is a score minigame — not a new evolution stage.
What happens if Pikachu faints a lot?
Each faint costs happiness (−1, more if the foe is much higher level or if poison knocks it out outside battle). That delays Bulbasaur and worsens partner reactions.
