How to Make Pikachu Happy in Pokemon Yellow
Yellow’s starter tracks a hidden 0–255 happiness byte that starts at 90. Level-ups and HP items hit hardest early, walking and gyms stack free gains if you keep Pikachu in the party, and Melanie’s Bulbasaur needs 147+. Use the planner below to project a path to any milestone.
Fast answer
Keep it out, level it, heal it
From 90, you need 57 more points for Bulbasaur. Under 100 happiness, each level-up or HP-restoring item on the starter is +5; from 100–199 the same actions drop to +3. Pure level-ups take about 18 gains from 90 to 147 if you never take losses—faster when you mix potions, walks, and gyms. Keep Pikachu alive in the party so walking rolls and Gym Leader challenges keep ticking. Do not deposit it in a PC while grinding bond (that costs −3 / −5). Verify the real value with Save Import or project multi-step plans in the Happiness Lab.

Party policy
Should you keep Pikachu in the party?
Yes — when grinding bond or gifts
- Walking happiness only rolls if the starter is alive in the party.
- Gym Leader challenges grant bond when the starter is present anywhere in the party.
- Follow sprite and many overworld reactions require the partner out and conscious.
- Bulbasaur, Museum, and late cry scenes all key off this same byte.
Switch out — do not box
- Bad matchups (Brock’s Rock/Ground) should be handled by another lead.
- Switching mid-battle does not tax happiness; PC deposit does (−3 / −5).
- Centers heal free of bond cost—prefer Centers over boxing “for safety.”
Bond taxes to avoid
- Battle faint: −1 every time.
- Poison overworld KO / 30+ level overkill: −5 or −10.
- PC deposit and trading the starter away are the harshest common mistakes.
Efficient early path (90 → 147)
- Clear Pewter with a non-Electric answer so Pikachu stops eating KOs.
- Stack Route 3 / Mt. Moon levels and potion the partner after rough fights.
- Arrive Cerulean with ~147, then visit Melanie west of the Center.
- Charmander (Route 24) and Squirtle (after Thunder Badge) do not need happiness.
Walking math
How steps raise happiness
Rules
Every 256 steps with the starter alive in the party, Yellow rolls a 50% chance to apply the walking happiness gain (+2 under 100, +1 at 100+).
Expected steps per successful walk gain: ~512.
Quick estimator
Need 57 more points purely from walking?
About 0 walk successes → ~0 expected steps from the current value (band-aware).
Walking alone is slow for 147—pair it with level-ups and HP items.

Play tips
Raise bond without stalling the story
Natural leveling is enough
A normal playthrough that keeps Pikachu for Thunderbolt training often crosses 147 before or during the Cerulean stretch—if faints and deposits stay rare.
Potions double as bond tools
When you are short a few points and sitting on Potions, healing the starter mid-route is often faster than pure walking.
Gyms are free spikes
Challenging a Gym Leader with the partner present adds bond even if another mon does the fighting. Plan gym entries with Pikachu still in the six.

For Celadon cry / max bond grind, import the save. Projection tables help; the battery byte is truth.
FAQ
Pikachu happiness questions
How do I make Pikachu happy in Pokemon Yellow?
Keep the starter alive in the party, level it, use HP items on it, walk for 256-step rolls, and challenge gyms. Avoid PC deposits and unnecessary faints. Start is 90; Bulbasaur needs 147+.
How much happiness for Bulbasaur?
Melanie requires happiness ≥ 147. House west of the Cerulean Pokemon Center; gift is Lv.10 Bulbasaur.
Does happiness make Pikachu evolve?
No. Starter Pikachu refuses a Thunder Stone in Yellow. Happiness gates gifts and reactions, not a Raichu evolution of the partner. See the evolution guide.
Should I keep Pikachu in the party?
Yes for walking gains, gym gains, follow sprite, and Bulbasaur. Switch out mid-fight when needed—do not box the starter just to protect it.
How do I see the exact number?
Use Save Import or the full ledger in the Happiness Lab. This planner estimates with the same band table.
