The Volcano's Base Walkthrough and Checklist

The Volcano's Base Walkthrough and Checklist

The Volcano's Base (W2) opens after the Desert Ruins scroll clears the tornado. Use the finder below for every Gray, Red, Green, and Blue chest, all eight Musical Coins, and the Doll Boy arena—with exact room-map links for Day/Night and each map variant. First priority is the Gray Chest Lead Overalls, which permanently unlocks Ground Pound (smash attack).

Lead Overalls

FIRST CLEAR PRIORITY

Open the Gray Chest for Lead Overalls and permanent Ground Pound

Carry the Gray Key to the Gray Chest and take Lead Overalls. That move lets Wario smash floor blocks from above and unlocks layout Variant 2 in N1 Out of the Woods and N3 The Vast Plain. Come back later for the Blue Gem, Crown, Blue Tusk, Musical Coins, and Doll Boy.

BOSS · THE VOLCANO'S BASE

How to beat Doll Boy

Doll Boy

Doll Boy

Hammer-wielding doll boss for W2 The Volcano's Base. The arena is in room 26 on the default Day map and uses three stage barrels plus a hammer platform pattern.

Hammer contact can force Bouncy Wario—that bounce form is the main way to reach Doll Boy between barrel and walking phases. After the final hit, Doll Boy stops attacking and remaining arena parts clear.

1

Barrel phase

Three arena barrels and hammer impacts set the opening pattern. Learn the safe gaps before committing to big jumps.

2

Walking + Bouncy

Doll Boy switches to a mobile attack pattern. Hammer hits can create Bouncy Wario for the height you need.

3

Defeat clear

After the final hit, Doll Boy stops attacking and remaining arena parts disappear so you can leave cleanly.

WEST VOLCANO ROUTE

How The Volcano's Base fits the early West path

1

Unlock W2

Finish both scroll halves in W1 Desert Ruins. The completed scroll clears the tornado and opens The Volcano's Base.

2

Lead Overalls first

Take the Gray Chest immediately. Ground Pound opens blocked floors here and unlocks Variant 2 revisits in Out of the Woods and The Vast Plain.

3

Rain path next

After abilities and desert progress, grab the Jar from N1 to start the rainstorm linking W2 to W3 The Pool of Rain and W4 A Town in Chaos.

Eruption set later: Blue Tusk (this level) pairs with Red Tusk from S4 The Steep Canyon and Green Flower from E1 The Stagnant Swamp. All three trigger the volcano eruption for W6 The West Crater and the Frigid Sea → Colossal Hole path.

MAP VARIANTS · DAY & NIGHT

When The Volcano's Base layout changes

W2 has four progression variants on both Day and Night. Variant 1 is available once the scroll clears the tornado. Later variants open after you collect specific treasures elsewhere:

Variant Requirements Notes Map
V1 None (level open via Desert Ruins scroll) Default first visit. Grab Lead Overalls here. Open Day map
V2 Truck Wheel (S1 Red Chest) Truck-linked layout for deeper W2 revisits. Open Day map
V3 Flute (E1 Gray Chest) Flute-linked layout for mid/late clean-up routes. Open Day map
V4 Foot of Stone (N5 Red Chest) Late layout for remaining chests, coins, and boss clean-up. Open Day map
Variant loop tip: Lead Overalls is available on Variant 1. If a later chest or coin path looks sealed, finish Truck Wheel, Flute, or Foot of Stone, then return on the matching Day/Night variant.

FIRST VISIT ROUTE

What to do in The Volcano's Base on the first clear

1

Enter from the cleared tornado

After both Desert Ruins scroll halves, walk into W2 from the West map. This is the early ability stop on the beginner treasure order.

2

Gray Key → Lead Overalls

Hunt the Gray Key in the volcano room family (rooms 0, 9, 11–15, 17, 29), open the Gray Chest in rooms 6 / 16, and leave with permanent Ground Pound.

3

Revisit W2 later

Come back for Blue Gem, Crown, Blue Tusk, Musical Coins, and Doll Boy when Truck Wheel, Flute, or Foot of Stone unlock remaining rooms—or when the eruption set is in progress.

FAQ

The Volcano's Base FAQ

How do you unlock The Volcano's Base?

Collect the Top Half of Scroll and Bottom Half of Scroll in W1 Desert Ruins. The completed scroll clears the tornado and opens W2 The Volcano's Base.

How do I open the Gray / Grey Chest in The Volcano's Base?

Find the matching Gray Key in the volcano room set (rooms 0, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17, or 29 depending on map state), carry it to the Gray Chest in rooms 6 or 16, and open it for Lead Overalls.

How do I ground pound / get the smash attack?

Lead Overalls permanently unlocks Ground Pound. Press down while airborne to smash floor blocks. A later upgrade, Super Jump Slam Overalls from E3 Castle of Illusions, strengthens the slam for reinforced floors.

What does Blue Tusk do?

Blue Tusk is one of three volcano pieces. Pair it with Red Tusk (S4 The Steep Canyon, Red Chest) and Green Flower (E1 The Stagnant Swamp, Red Chest) to trigger the eruption that opens W6 The West Crater and connects The Frigid Sea to The Colossal Hole.

What are Blue Gem and Crown for?

Both count toward the full 100 treasures Perfect screen. Blue Gem sits with Red Gem (N3) and Green Gem (N5) as a collectible set; Crown is a standalone completion treasure. Neither is required for the five Music Box temple ending.

How many Musical Coins are in The Volcano's Base?

Eight—the same as every other level. Use the coin table above or the full Musical Coins Finder if you are missing one for golf Course 4 or 100% side goals.

How do you beat Doll Boy?

Enter the boss arena in room 26. Learn the barrel hammer openings, then use Bouncy Wario from hammer contact to reach Doll Boy during the walking phase. After the final hit, arena parts clear so you can exit.

Is The Volcano's Base required for the ending?

Lead Overalls is a critical early ability and layout unlock. Blue Tusk is part of a mid-game map-changing eruption set. Blue Gem, Crown, Musical Coins, and Doll Boy support completion, golf, and 100% side goals rather than the five Music Box ending set itself.
