Celebi, Coin Case & Game Corner

Celebi cannot be caught or gifted on original Gold or Silver. This page answers that search directly, then turns the real mid-game tool you do get—the Coin Case—into a prize planner for Goldenrod and Celadon Game Corners. Everything is for original Game Boy Color carts (not HeartGold/SoulSilver).

Fast answer

Celebi no · Coin Case yes

Celebi: original Gold/Silver never spawn, gift, or event-flag a wild Celebi. The GS Ball / Ilex Forest catch path belongs to Crystal. HGSS instead uses an externally distributed Celebi to trigger a separate event; it has no GS Ball catch route. On G/S, trade Celebi from another Gen II game/event source.

Coin Case: after you can freely explore Goldenrod, enter the Underground and pick up the ball at tile (7, 25). Then buy coins (50 for ¥1,000 / 500 for ¥10,000), play machines, and redeem TMs and prize mon. Celebi is never a prize.

How to get Celebi in Gold & Silver

Availability

Not on the G/S overworld

Psychic Grass
  • Catch rate in data: 45 (only relevant if one is somehow present)
  • Base stats: 100 across the board (total 600)
  • G/S obtain method: Trade required
  • Wild held item: none in normal play
  • Kurt’s house: Celebi statue text only—no gift
Original GBC No GS Ball flag No Ilex encounter

Legitimate paths that work with a G/S cart

  • Trade from Pokémon Crystal after that game’s GS Ball / Ilex Forest Celebi (VC event on 3DS Crystal, or historical distribution). Full Crystal steps: How to get Celebi in Crystal.
  • Trade from another Gen II cart or emulator save that already owns Celebi. Use a normal Gold/Silver/Crystal link trade; the Time Capsule rejects every Gen II species, including Celebi.
  • Dex completion without owning it: Celadon Mansion 2F/3F completion dialogue historically ignores Mew and Celebi when judging “complete”—still list them as missing National entries if you want every mon.

What people confuse with G/S

  • Crystal GS Ball — different ROM; Kurt appraises the ball, then Ilex Forest event.
  • HeartGold / SoulSilver — an externally distributed Celebi triggers a time-travel event; HGSS does not provide a GS Ball catch route.
  • Coin Case “any Pokémon” claims — not a designed feature; see Risks. This site does not publish ACE steps.
  • Mewtwo in Cerulean Cave — also absent from original G/S maps; import from Gen 1 via Time Capsule (same dex guide).

Key Item

Coin Case location

Pickup details

  • Map: Goldenrod Underground
  • Tile: (7, 25) — visible Poké Ball object
  • Versions: Gold and Silver identical
  • Pickup: one-time item ball (disappears after collection)
  • Pocket: Key Items · holds up to 9,999 coins
  • Description: “Holds up to 9,999 game coins.”
When can you reach it? After Goldenrod opens in the Johto story (post-Azalea / Ilex / early Goldenrod access). You do not need Whitney’s badge just to grab the ball, but you will want a free bag slot only if other items block travel—Coin Case itself is a Key Item.

What the Coin Case unlocks

  • Coin vendor purchases at Goldenrod and Celadon Game Corners
  • Prize mon and TM counters (both corners check for the item)
  • Celadon Fisher’s one-time gift of 18 coins (requires the case)
  • Displaying your coin balance in prize menus

Amulet Coin is a different item (held money booster in Dept. Store B1F)—do not confuse the two.

Tick quantities for prizes you want. Vendors sell only 50 or 500 coins, so the calculator rounds purchases up to the next 50-coin block. Porygon’s 9,999 coins cannot be reached from zero by cash purchases alone: buy at most 9,950, then earn or receive the remaining 49.

Safety

Glitch myths vs designed play

Coin Case display bug

Opening the Coin Case in certain edge cases can softlock or corrupt a save on original hardware and some emulators. Treat glitch videos as high risk. This page does not walk through memory exploits or “any Pokémon” methods.

No Celebi from prizes

Neither Game Corner list includes Celebi. Spending 9,999 coins on Porygon is the maximum mon spend—not a mythical unlock.

Prefer Crystal for GS Ball

If your goal is a legitimate story Celebi, play or trade from Crystal’s GS Ball route. Keep G/S runs focused on Johto legendaries, beasts, and dex trades.

Save hygiene

Before heavy Game Corner sessions or any third-party glitch video, hard-save and back up emulator states. Key Items cannot be tossed if something goes wrong mid-menu.

Scope. Designed content on this page: Coin Case location, vendor rates, prize tables, Celebi availability. Out of scope: step-by-step memory exploits, Gameshark codes, and ROM hacks.

Quick FAQ

Common questions

Question Answer
Can you get Celebi in Gold/Silver without trading? Not through any designed overworld encounter, gift, or Game Corner prize on original GBC carts.
Is GS Ball in Gold/Silver? No. The GS Ball / Kurt / Ilex catch route is Crystal-only; HGSS uses a distributed Celebi for a different event.
Where is Coin Case? Goldenrod Underground item ball at tile (7, 25).
Gold vs Silver prize difference? Goldenrod mid prize mon: Ekans on Gold, Sandshrew on Silver. TMs and other mons match.
How many coins for Porygon? 9,999, but cash vendors only sell multiples of 50. From zero, buy 9,950 coins and obtain the remaining 49 from play or gifts.
Do I need Whitney first? Not for the Underground ball. Whitney matters for other Goldenrod gates (Plain Badge, SquirtBottle path).
HeartGold / SoulSilver? Different maps and events. This page is original GBC Gold/Silver only.
