Pokemon Yellow Ditto glitch

In Yellow, “Ditto glitch” usually means using a wild Ditto’s Transform to copy your Pokémon’s Special, then finishing a Trainer-Fly / long-range trainer setup so the game spawns a Level 7 encounter from that Special (Gen I species index). This page maps Ditto locations, Transform rules, a Special→species lookup, and links into the full Mew and MissingNo. guides.

Fast answer

What the Ditto method actually does

Trainer-Fly encounter generation reads the last foe’s Special as a species index. A wild Ditto that Transforms into your donor inherits that mon’s Special. Fleeing afterward can leave Special = your donor’s value without needing a trainer party that already rolls that Special. Mew is index 21. This does not turn a caught Ditto into the copied species.

Risk

Save hygiene

Unstable indexes can softlock, corrupt party data, or spawn glitch trainers. Keep an offline copy of your save. Prefer documented targets (especially Mew @ Special 21). Yellow still patches the classic old-man MissingNo. path—see the MissingNo. FAQ.

Where to find Ditto

Yellow encounter tables

Ditto is not on early Kanto routes in Yellow. The first practical grass table is Pokemon Mansion B1F after you reach Cinnabar. Rates and levels match this site’s map/Pokédex extract from the English Yellow wild data.

Mechanics

Transform in Pokemon Yellow

Not a clone machine

Transform is battle-only state. Catching the wild mon always yields Ditto with Transform—your stats are not permanently stolen onto a new species.

PP stays weird

Copied moves get 5 PP in battle. Transformed mons do not decrement party PP the same way as normal—another Gen 1 quirk used in advanced glitch tech.

Yellow vs Red/Blue

Yellow blocks reordering moves with Select while transformed (the Red/Blue swap-transform trick). Encounter tables also differ—use Mansion/Cave, not R/B route grass lists.

How-to

Ditto Special-copy method

Need a concrete early Mew path without memorizing Special math? Use the Mew glitch guide (Koffing / Slowpoke / Shellder Special 21 trainers). Ditto is the flexible alternative when you already have a donor mon at the right Special.

Tool

Special → species index lookup

Trainer-Fly uses the Gen I internal index, not the National Dex number. Example: Charizard is Dex #6 but index 180; Mew is Dex #151 but index 21.

FAQ

Ditto glitch questions

Does the Ditto glitch still work in Pokemon Yellow?

Yes—the Transform Special-copy approach and Trainer-Fly family still function on English Yellow. Some Red/Blue-only Transform menu tricks (Select move swap) are fixed in Yellow.

Where is the earliest Ditto in Yellow?

Pokemon Mansion B1F on Cinnabar Island (roughly Lv. 12–24, about 10.6% of grass slots). Cerulean Cave has higher-level Ditto after you become Champion.

If Ditto transforms into my Mew, can I catch Mew?

No. Catching the wild mon still gives Ditto. Transform never changes the species you receive in the ball for a wild Ditto fight.

How is this different from the Mew glitch page?

The Mew guide focuses on long-range trainers and fixed Special-21 foes (Koffing, Slowpoke, Shellder). This page focuses on Ditto as a flexible Special copier plus locations and Transform rules. Use both together.

Is this the same as item duplication / Rare Candy glitch?

No. Duplication and MissingNo. item side effects are separate—see the item duplication and MissingNo. pages. Ditto is mainly about encounter species via Special.
