Pokemon Yellow Trainer Fly Glitch
Escape a long-range trainer, restore controls with a walking trainer, load a foe’s Special as a species index, then return for a Level 7 forced encounter. Mew is index 21—Yellow can do it early via the Viridian Forest Bug Catcher. Use the calculator and index lookup below for any Special target.
Fast answer
Four phases, one stored Special
1) Trigger a long-range trainer, open Start mid-approach, leave with Escape Rope / Dig / Fly / Teleport. 2) Fight a trainer who walks ≥1 tile into you (restores the menu). 3) End a battle on a mon whose Special equals the index you want—trainer Special is deterministic: floor((Base + 8) × Level / 50) + 5. 4) Return to the escape map with no extra fights; close auto Start → wild Level 7 of that index. For Mew routes with step-by-step catch tips, open the Mew glitch guide.
Safety
Save often · softlocks are real
Talking face-to-face with a trainer during the frozen-menu phase, fighting after you load Special, or stepping into grass before the return can break the setup. Keep a save before the long-range Escape Rope and before the Special donor fight. This is an informational glitch guide—not a substitute for careful play.

Escape options
How you leave the long-range fight
Escape Rope
Best early-game option. Heal at a Center first so the rope returns there. Pewter Center is the Forest method hub.
Teleport
Abra / Kadabra or TM30. Yellow TM05 is Mega Kick, not Teleport. Yellow Abra is not on Route 24/25 grass—plan catches via Route 5, Game Corner, or other listed sources.
Fly (HM02)
Classic late setup. Escape with Fly to a town, then walk back onto the escape route to trigger the encounter.
Dig
Works when the last outdoor map is a valid Dig target (caves / dungeons). Less common for early Mew routes.

Play tips
Keep the glitch stable
Open Start at least once
Before re-entering the escape map, flash Start so text-box state is safe. Auto Start on entry is expected—close it to spawn the encounter.
No battles after Special
Any other fight overwrites the stored Special. Path carefully through grass; Escape Rope again if your route risks wilds.
Growl can lower encounter level
Using Growl on the Special-21 mon before it faints can reduce the forced encounter’s level via Attack stage quirks—optional catch cheese.
Ditto is a flexible loader
Wild Ditto Transform copies your mon’s Special. Pair with Trainer Fly when you need an index your fixed trainers do not provide. See the Ditto glitch page.
FAQ
Trainer Fly questions
What is the Trainer Fly glitch in Pokemon Yellow?
A long-range trainer escape plus Special-as-species-index exploit that forces a Level 7 wild encounter when you return to the escape map. Mew is the famous Special 21 case.
Does it work without Fly?
Yes. Escape Rope and Teleport are enough. Yellow’s Forest Bug Catcher is the classic no-Fly early path.
Is this MissingNo.?
No. MissingNo. uses different glitches (old man / Cinnabar paths are largely removed or different in Yellow). Trainer Fly is the Mew-family engine. See the MissingNo. FAQ.
Can I get any Pokemon?
Any valid internal index that maps to a species (and some glitch slots). Use the index table—Special is not the National Dex number except by coincidence.
Where are full Mew step lists?
On the Mew glitch guide—early Forest, Route 24 quick, and classic Route 8 routes with catch tips.
