Can you get Mew legitimately in Pokemon Yellow?

Short answer: not as a normal wild, gift, or story Pokémon. Without GameShark you can still force Level 7 Mew with the Trainer Fly glitch (Special 21). Codes, trades, and historical events are separate paths. Use the picker below to match your definition of “legitimate.”

Fast answer

Define “legitimate,” then pick a path

Yellow’s map and gift data contain no Mew encounter. If legitimate means “intended single-cart story,” the answer is no. If it means “no cheat devices, in-engine only,” the answer is yes—via Trainer Fly. If codes or trading an already-obtained Mew count, those work too. Diploma tracking on this site does not require #151.

If your legitimacy bar allows glitches but not devices, these are the Yellow-ready routes. Full step lists live on the Mew guide; Special index math lives on the Trainer Fly toolkit.

Play tips

Avoid common legitimacy mix-ups

“Without cheats” ≠ “intended”

Guides that promise Mew without GameShark are usually teaching Trainer Fly. That is honest—and still an exploit.

MissingNo. will not save you in Yellow

The classic old-man coast method is patched. Do not chain MissingNo. myths into a Mew hunt—use Trainer Fly instead.

Skipping Mew is valid

Many no-glitch runs never touch #151. Oak ratings and diploma paths on this site are built around that reality.

Catch prep still matters

Glitch Mew is only Level 7, but catch rate 45 with full HP can waste balls. Sleep / freeze plus Catch Planner odds help.
