Do I need to trade to finish Pokemon Yellow?

Story answer: no. Credits and the Champion do not require a second cart. Pokédex answer: it depends—diploma 150 and a living set pull in NPC trades, one-save choices, and link-trade gaps. Pick your goal below for a direct verdict.

Story: no trade Diploma 150: needs trades Living 151: yes Machamp: NPC OK

Fast answer

Finish ≠ fill the dex

If “finish” means beat the game, play solo. If it means diploma 150 or a living dex, plan link trades—Yellow’s gap list leaves a solo cart short of 150 owned.

No trade

Champion credits

Badges, Victory Road, Elite Four, Rival. Any legal solo team works—see no-trade team and Elite Four tools.

Needs trade

Diploma 150

Owned-count goal in Celadon Mansion. Mew not required, but gap families still force link trades (or glitches) to reach 150 owned.

Needs trade

Living completeness

All families, trade evolutions, both Dojo fighters, both fossils, three Eeveelutions—plan a link partner or multi-save logistics.

Link-trade gap list

Species flagged trade-required

These entries are marked trade-required in the site’s Yellow availability data. Story mode can ignore them entirely.

Trade evolutions

Link vs NPC

Machamp — solo OK

Trade Cubone to the in-game NPC for Machoke; it evolves into Machamp as part of that exchange. No second cartridge required.

Alakazam · Golem · Gengar

Kadabra, Graveler, and Haunter need a link trade to evolve. Keep a stone/copy plan if you want both stages.

Raichu special case

Partner Pikachu refuses the Thunder Stone. A Raichu for the dex needs a non-partner Pikachu or a traded Raichu.

One-save permanent choices

Not always “trade,” but still a second mon problem

Practical plan

Recommended order

1. Solo the story

Ignore trades until Champion. Use gift starters, Nidoking routes, and Lapras for coverage.

2. Sweep NPC trades

Pick up Mr. Mime, Dugtrio path, Cubone→Machamp, and the rest while you still visit those cities.

3. Count owned for diploma

Push toward 150 with wild lines, fossils, legendaries, and gifts. Open Catch Planner + Pokedex trackers.

4. Schedule one link session

Only if you want living completeness: gap families, Alakazam/Gengar/Golem, extra Dojo/fossil/Eevee branches.

FAQ

Trade questions

Do I need to trade to finish Pokemon Yellow?

No for the story. Yes if “finish” means a full living Pokédex with every family and trade evolution.

Can I get the diploma alone?

Mew is not required, but solo Yellow cannot reach 150 owned while the trade-gap families remain missing. Maximize NPC trades and solo sources, then link trade the gap list—or use glitch methods if you accept the risk.

Does the game force a trade evolution?

No story boss requires Alakazam, Gengar, or Golem. They are optional. Machamp is the convenient solo trade evolution via NPC.

What about glitches instead of trading?

Glitch encounters can create otherwise missing species, including Mew setups. They are optional, version-sensitive, and risky for saves—see the Mew and glitch guides if you choose that route.
