Pokemon Yellow exclusive Pokemon

Yellow is not “Red exclusives only” or “Blue exclusives only.” It softens many R/B splits on one cart—then still leaves clear trade gaps. Use this page to see what you can catch solo, what still needs another game, and how that differs from classic Red/Blue exclusive hunting.

Fast Answer

Softer exclusives, not zero exclusives

On a solo Yellow cart you can grab many species that used to force a Red or Blue choice—especially Sandshrew, both grass lines, Growlithe + Vulpix, and both Scyther and Pinsir. You still cannot solo a true 151: Weedle, Ekans, Meowth, Koffing, Jynx, Electabuzz, Magmar, and partner-Raichu need external trades (or special cases). Diploma goal stays 150 owned without Mew.

Yellow-available “soft exclusives”

Oddish Bellsprout

Both grass lines

Oddish + Bellsprout
  • R/B split them; Yellow offers both wild.
  • Common on Routes 12–15 style grass tables.
  • Helps Misty / water stretches without gift Bulbasaur only.
Growlithe Vulpix

Both Fire foxes

Mansion + Corner
  • Growlithe wild in Pokemon Mansion.
  • Vulpix Game Corner prize (1,000 coins), Lv.18.
  • Stone evolve for Ninetales / Arcanine.
Scyther Pinsir

Both bug prizes

6,500 coins each
  • R/B split Scyther/Pinsir; Yellow lists both at the Corner.
  • Also appear in wild data on this cart—Corner is the reliable paid path.

All three starters

Gifts · Yellow feature
  • Not lab exclusives—story gifts on one cart.
  • Bulbasaur needs Pikachu happiness 147.
  • Full checklist: all starters guide.

Partner Pikachu

Edition exclusive
  • Follows you; refuses Thunder Stone as the partner mon.
  • Level-up Thunderbolt at 26—see moveset tool.
  • Raichu still needs a non-partner path / trade.

Not on a solo cart

Trade-gap families in Yellow

These lines have no wild / gift / prize / fossil / in-game trade source in the Yellow datasets used by this site (except Raichu’s partner-stone note). Bring them from Red, Blue, Crystal-era transfers, events, or glitches if your rules allow.

Weedle

Weedle line

Trade required

No Viridian Forest Weedle table like classic Red/Blue. Entire family is external-trade only on Yellow.

Ekans

Ekans · Arbok

Trade required

Not wild. Jessie & James still use Ekans flavor in story fights—that does not grant a catchable line.

Meowth

Meowth · Persian

Trade required

Anime Team Rocket mascot is story-only here. No wild Meowth for your party without a trade.

Koffing

Koffing · Weezing

Trade required

Same story as Ekans: Rocket flavor without a solo catch path. Trade in for dex or team.

Jynx Electabuzz Magmar

Jynx · Electabuzz · Magmar

Still locked

No Power Plant / mansion gift fix for these three. Classic multi-version trade targets remain.

Raichu

Raichu (partner case)

Trade / non-partner
  • Partner Pikachu refuses Thunder Stone.
  • Need a traded non-partner Pikachu, a traded Raichu, or special rules.

Evolution gates

Trade evolutions vs single-cart Machamp

Link-trade only

  • Kadabra → Alakazam
  • Graveler → Golem
  • Haunter → Gengar

Pre-evos are obtainable; finals need a second device/game.

Machamp

Machamp on one cart

Cubone NPC trade

Trade Cubone for Machoke; it evolves into Machamp immediately. That is the clean single-cart Fighting final.

Dojo permanent choice

One per save

Fighting Dojo: Hitmonlee or Hitmonchan. The other needs trade or another cart for living dex.

Field notes

How to use this on a real run

Story first, dex second

Yellow’s softened exclusives make a fun single-cart story. Chase diploma species with Catch Planner; leave trade gaps for a trading session.

Don’t trust pure R/B lists

Guides that say “Sandshrew is Red only” or “Vulpix is Blue only” are incomplete for Yellow. Always prefer Yellow encounter tables.

Jessie ≠ catchable Ekans

Anime Rocket fights use exclusive flavor mons. That does not put Ekans/Meowth/Koffing in your PC. See the J&J guide.

FAQ

Exclusive Pokemon questions

What Pokemon are exclusive to Pokemon Yellow?

Think in two layers: (1) edition features like partner Pikachu and gift starters; (2) softened wild/prize pools that combine many Red and Blue options. Yellow is not a third pure exclusive list like “only these ten wild mons.”

Can I get both Scyther and Pinsir in Yellow?

Yes. Both appear as 6,500-coin Game Corner prizes (and in wild data). That is one of the biggest exclusive-pain reductions versus R/B.

Is Ekans or Meowth in Yellow?

Not as obtainable wild/gift species. Trade them in. Story Rocket battles may still show them.

Do I need Red or Blue to finish the dex?

For a living 151, yes historically—you need other games or events for trade-gap families and most trade evolutions. Diploma at 150 owned is the normal in-game finish line without Mew.

Where is Vulpix in Yellow?

Game Corner Prize Room for 1,000 coins at level 18—not a common early wild mon like some Blue guides imply.
