Pokemon Yellow Nidoran speed route
The classic Gen 1 pace strategy still works in Yellow: Route 22 Nidoran♂ → Double Kick (Lv.12) for Brock → Moon Stone Nidoking as your physical carry. Yellow always keeps partner Pikachu, so this is a Nido + Pikachu core rather than a pure solo mon any%.
Fast Answer
Why Nidoran wins Yellow early game
Partner Pikachu deals zero Electric damage to Brock. Nidoran♂ learns Horn Attack (8) and Double Kick (12), evolves to Nidorino at 16, then becomes Poison/Ground Nidoking with a Moon Stone. Evolve before level 23 if you want Nidoking to learn Thrash at Lv.23; the stone itself does not teach the move. This page is an efficient story / practice speed route, not a frame-perfect leaderboard guide.
Encounter table
Where to catch Nidoran in Yellow
| Area | Species | Levels | Grass share (approx.) | When |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Route 22 | Nidoran♂ / ♀ | 2–4 | ~59% combined Nido slots | Right after Oak—primary hunt |
| Route 2 | Nidoran♂ / ♀ | 4–6 | ~30% combined | Backup before Viridian Forest |
| Route 9 / 10 | Nidoran + rare Nidorino | 16–18 | High for base form | Too late for Brock; fine for living dex |
| Route 22 | Mankey | 3–5 | ~20% | Backup Brock answer (Low Kick 9) |
Practical hunt: leave Viridian toward Route 22, fight or skip the optional early Rival, repel-less grind grass until a male appears. One Great Ball / a few Poké Balls is enough at these levels.
Line choice
Male vs female
Prefer male → Nidoking
- Horn Attack (8) + Double Kick (12) for Brock.
- Lv.16 → Nidorino, then Moon Stone → Nidoking.
- Nidoking learns Thrash at Lv.23—the Moon Stone evolution itself does not add the move.
- Poison/Ground STAB later answers Electric and many Rock/Poison cores.
Female → Nidoqueen
- Still learns Double Kick at 12—Brock is fine.
- Scratch path instead of Horn Attack early.
- Nidoqueen is the safer tank; slightly less classic “smash route” energy.
- Keep her if you already invested and do not want to re-hunt.
Timeline
Efficient Nido route through early Kanto
- Pallet → Viridian: Partner Pikachu, parcel, shop Poké Balls.
- Route 22 hunt: Catch Nidoran♂ (Mankey optional insurance). Optional early Rival for EXP.
- Route 1 / Viridian grind: Horn Attack at 8, Double Kick at 12. A Nidoran you caught yourself always obeys regardless of level; badge obedience limits apply to traded Pokemon.
- Pewter Gym: Double Kick Geodude Lv.10 and Onix Lv.12. Details on the Brock tool.
- Route 3 → Mt. Moon: Grab a Moon Stone (visible 1F, hidden B2F, etc.). Hit Lv.16 for Nidorino when convenient.
- Stone timing: Evolve to Nidoking before Lv.23 to learn Thrash at that level; many players use the stone soon after Nidorino evolves at 16.
- Cerulean+: Pikachu (and optional Bulbasaur gift) covers Misty; Nido continues physical work. See Misty / gift guides.
- Mid game: Teach TM coverage as you find it (e.g. BubbleBeam, Thunderbolt later for others). Nidoking remains the Ground/Poison pivot through Rocket and beyond.
Benchmarks
Suggested level bands (story pace)
Bands match Yellow leader windows, not world-record splits. Raise into each band before forcing the fight.

Moves & items
Learnset checkpoints & Moon Stone
Nidoran♂ level-up (early)
- 1 Leer / Tackle
- 8 Horn Attack
- 12 Double Kick ← Brock key
- 17 Poison Sting
- 16 evolves to Nidorino (level method)
Nidoking notes
- Moon Stone evolution adds Ground typing; Thrash is learned by Nidoking at Lv.23, not on evolution.
- Poison/Ground typing: strong into Electric; weak to Ground/Psychic/Water/Ice paths—scout gyms.
- Pair with Pikachu Thunderbolt (26) and gift Lapras/Ice later for League Dragons.
Earliest Moon Stones
- Mt. Moon 1F visible pickup
- Mt. Moon B2F hidden (Itemfinder)
- Route 2 visible (needs Cut for some paths—plan ahead)
- Later: Rocket Hideout, Mansion

Tips
Yellow-specific gotchas
Not a pure solo run
Partner Pikachu is forced. Use him for Misty and Electric matchups instead of forcing Nido into bad types.
Focus Energy is a trap
Gen 1 Focus Energy is bugged and lowers crit rate. Skip teaching or using it on the Nido line for serious routing.
Thrash lock
Thrash confuses you after the rampage. Don’t start it into something that will KO mid-rampage without a plan.
Reset-friendly hunt
If Route 22 only yields females and you care about King vs Queen, soft reset or keep hunting—Double Kick still works on female for Brock only.
