Poké Flute & Snorlax in Pokemon Yellow

The two road-blocking Snorlax wake when you play the Poké Flute. Rescue Mr. Fuji through Pokémon Tower—normally with the Silph Scope, although a Gen I Poké Doll can bypass Marowak—then visit Fuji’s house. Route 12 and Route 16 each hold a one-time Lv.30 fight.

Fast answer

Flute unlock, then two wake-ups

Silph Scope → Pokémon Tower rescue → Poké Flute at Mr. Fuji’s House. Use the flute on the sleeping sprites on Route 12 (east of Lavender) and Route 16 (Cycling Road approach). Each battle is permanent: catch Snorlax for the dex/team, or KO it just to open the road.

One-shot warning

Fleeing or fainting mid-fight

Do not run: fleeing is treated like defeating the Snorlax, sets the event flag, and removes that sprite permanently. Catching or KOing also removes it. A full-party blackout follows the special reset path, so the sprite remains and you can return to retry.

How to unlock the Poké Flute

Silph ScopeRocket Hideout

Scope first

The intended route uses Silph Scope from Rocket Hideout so Tower ghosts can be identified. Gen I also lets a Poké Doll end the Marowak encounter and continue the rescue without the Scope; this is a sequence bypass, not the normal story route.

Mr. Fuji’s gift

After the Tower rescue, enter Mr. Fuji’s House for the flute. It also wakes sleeping Pokémon in battle (not just overworld Snorlax).

Static encounters

Route 12 & Route 16 Snorlax

Which one first?

  • Route 12 opens coastal progress east of Lavender / toward Fuchsia routes.
  • Route 16 gates the Cycling Road corridor west of Celadon.
  • You can catch both—different tiles, same species, both Lv.30.

Bicycle (optional)

Bike Voucher: Vermilion Pokémon Fan Club. Exchange: Cerulean Bike Shop. Required for free travel on Cycling Road rules, not for playing the flute itself.

Battle tips

Keeping Snorlax asleep

Status matters

Sleep/freeze gives the best Gen I catch bonus. Snorlax can Rest later in its learnset—finish the catch early if it starts recovering.

HP floor

Lower current HP raises the HP factor in the catch formula. Avoid KO; bring low-power moves or chip with status.

Ultra Balls

Stock Celadon / department stores before the flute unlock if you want both statics. Resources budget: Run Resources.

Team role

Huge HP and Body Slam make Snorlax a late story wall. Plan moves in the Team Planner and compare shells on the best team page.

FAQ

Poké Flute questions

Where is the Poké Flute in Pokemon Yellow?

Mr. Fuji’s House in Lavender Town after you rescue him at the top of Pokémon Tower. Silph Scope is the intended requirement; a Poké Doll can bypass the Marowak battle in Gen I.

How do I wake Snorlax?

Select the Poké Flute in Key Items while facing the sleeping sprite on Route 12 or Route 16.

Can I get two Snorlax?

Yes—one per static tile (Route 12 and Route 16), each once per save.

What if I only want the road open?

Defeat the Snorlax. The blocker still clears; you just miss that catch for the living dex until another save/trade method.

Does the flute work in battle?

Yes. It can wake a sleeping party Pokémon in battle as well as overworld Snorlax.
