Stuck on ghosts in Pokemon Tower, the Game Corner elevator, Silph doors, or a locked Cinnabar Gym? This tool lists every story-blocking key item in English Pokemon Yellow—where it drops, what it unlocks, and which map / walkthrough step to open next. Checklist progress stays in this browser.

Fast Answer

The three “stuck” keys

Silph Scope comes from Rocket Hideout B4F after Giovanni (you need the Lift Key for the elevator first). Secret Key is a ball on Pokemon Mansion B1F and opens Cinnabar Gym. S.S. Ticket (often searched as “leftover ticket”) is Bill’s gift on Route 25—board the Anne in Vermilion and finish the ship before it leaves. Full story order and secondary keys are below.

Story order

Recommended key-item sequence

Follow this order so you never stand in Tower without a Scope or at Cinnabar Gym without the Secret Key. Badges still gate some field moves—see the gym tool for obedience and HM outdoor rules.

  2. 2 S.S. Ticket (Bill)
  3. 3 Bike Voucher / Bicycle

Lift Key

Rocket Hideout B4FElevator gate

Enter the hideout from the poster in the Game Corner. Spinner tiles lead through B1F–B4F. On B4F, clear the Rocket that drops the Lift Key (floor ball once the event fires). Without it, the elevator stays dead and you cannot finish the hideout cleanly.

  • Map target: RocketHideoutB4F
  • Unlocks: hideout elevator warps between floors
  • Walkthrough objective: “Collect the Lift Key”

Silph Scope

After GiovanniTower required

With the Lift Key, ride to Giovanni on B4F. Defeat him; the Silph Scope is the critical ball/story reward on that floor. Take it before you leave—Pokemon Tower ghosts stay unidentifiable without it, so Mr. Fuji and the Poké Flute stay locked.

  • Map target: RocketHideoutB4F
  • Unlocks: true forms of Tower ghosts + Marowak fight
  • Next: Lavender Tower → Fuji → Flute

1 · Enter

Game Corner poster → hideout. Bring status healing for Rocket parties and Jessie & James.

2 · Lift Key

Reach B4F, secure the Lift Key ball, then use elevators freely.

3 · Scope

Beat Giovanni, grab Silph Scope, leave for Lavender Town.

Lavender Town

Silph Scope → Poké Flute

Use the Scope in Pokemon Tower

Equip the story by simply owning the Silph Scope. Ghosts become real Pokemon; the channeler floors lead to the Rival branch and the restless Marowak guardian.

  • Bring attacks other than Normal or Fighting: Ghost is immune to both in Gen 1, and Ghost attacks are also ineffective against Normal
  • Clear Rocket on 7F to free Mr. Fuji
  • Walkthrough step: Pokémon Tower Rescue
Snorlax

Poké Flute

Mr. Fuji’s HouseWakes Snorlax

After the rescue, talk to Mr. Fuji at home for the Poké Flute. Use it on the Route 12 and Route 16 Snorlax blocks, and as a free sleep cure in battle.

Saffron City

Card Key · Silph Co. doors

Lapras

Card Key

Silph Co. 5FReusable doors

Pick up the visible Card Key ball on Silph Co. 5F. Face locked doors and open them—warps and Rocket fights lead to 7F Lapras, the Rival, Jessie & James, and Giovanni on 11F (Master Ball reward).

  • Map target: SilphCo5F
  • Does not expire; keep it for every Silph floor
  • Saffron’s gate guards open after you give one guard Fresh Water, Soda Pop, or Lemonade; the Poké Flute is unrelated

Why this blocks progress

Without the Card Key you cannot finish Silph, free Saffron for Sabrina’s gym, or collect mid-game Lapras. Pair this page with the gift Pokemon checklist when you plan party slots.

Fuchsia · Cinnabar

Gold Teeth, Strength, Secret Key

Gold Teeth → HM04 Strength

In Safari Zone West, grab the Gold Teeth ball before your step counter runs out. Return them to the Warden’s house in Fuchsia for HM04 Strength. Strength + Rainbow Badge outdoor use is required for many late puzzles (including Seafoam / Victory Road rocks).

Blaine

Secret Key

Mansion B1FCinnabar Gym door

Inside Pokemon Mansion, use statue switches to open the path to B1F and pick up the visible Secret Key. The gym door in Cinnabar stays sealed until you hold it—no Secret Key means no Blaine, no Volcano Badge, and a stalled League path.

Play tips

Avoid soft-locks and missables

Ship leaves after Cut

Once you have HM01 from the captain and leave the Anne, the ship departs. Sweep rooms and trainers first; the ticket itself is not missable, but ship loot is.

Scope before Tower

You can enter Tower early, but ghosts waste time until the Silph Scope exists. Finish Hideout Giovanni first.

Safari step budget

Gold Teeth and HM03 Surf compete with catch goals inside 500 steps. Pin Safari West and the Secret House on the map before you pay the entry fee.

Save import check

Import a .sav in Save Import / My Run to confirm badges and story flags if you are unsure whether a key event already fired.

FAQ

Common key-item questions

Where is the Silph Scope in Pokemon Yellow?

Rocket Hideout B4F under the Celadon Game Corner. Get the Lift Key, defeat Giovanni, and take the Silph Scope ball so Pokemon Tower ghosts can be identified.

Where is the Lift Key?

Also on Rocket Hideout B4F. It is required to run the hideout elevator and reach Giovanni cleanly for the Scope.

Where is the Secret Key?

Pokemon Mansion B1F on Cinnabar. Use statue switches, pick up the ball, then open Cinnabar Gym for Blaine.

What is the leftover ticket?

Almost always the S.S. Ticket from Bill on Route 25. It boards the Anne; clear the ship before it sails after you receive Cut.

Where is the Card Key?

Visible ball on Silph Co. 5F. Keep it to open doors across the building, including the path to Lapras and Giovanni.
