How to catch fish, then upgrade gear

Sound cues matter more than the tiny water animation. Wrong tackle shows up as rapid reject chimes; wrong fight rhythm shows up as mid-fight escapes.

The continuous-tone loop

  1. Separated chimes → wait (fish circling).
  2. One continuous tone → press A to hook.
  3. Fish pulling away → do not reel.
  4. Fish resting → hold A or B to reel.
  5. Escape tone → release, then repeat.

  • T.Rod — starter natural bait; current moves the bobber.
  • Surf / reel rods — B retrieves line; Teen gets one early.

Story gates matter as much as tackle. If a king never appears, fix map access and the story event before swapping every bait in your bag.

River King

White Catfish (W.Catfsh). Needs the river-king story gate on Summit. Lure access and the Kappa path help; average size is large—use the run-and-reel fight.

Ocean · trolling

Sea King

Ocean cruiser only. Equip a Trolling Rod with Spearfish Fly or Squid. R.30 or R.80 is enough; R.130 is optional later.

Remote Island

Fish King

After River King, Sea King, and Heaven Jewel progress. Remote Island accepts bait, lure, or trolling setups depending on the entry you chase.

What is the exact trick to fishing?

Press A only on the continuous tone. During the fight, reel on rests and release on the escape tone. Rapid unhappy chimes usually mean wrong bait, lure, or fly.

How do I reach Sea King or River King?

River King needs Summit story progress. Sea King needs Ocean cruiser trolling with Spearfish Fly or Squid. Fish King needs Remote Island after both kings and the Heaven Jewel route.

Is the 130-foot trolling rod required?

No. Start Sea King trolling with Trolling R.30 or the shop Trolling R.80. R.130 is a late Shore contest prize.
