The Frigid Sea Walkthrough and Checklist

The Frigid Sea Walkthrough and Checklist

The Frigid Sea (E2) is the frozen eastern level that opens after Blue Book and Magic Wand freeze a path from The Stagnant Swamp. Use the finder below for every Gray, Red, Green, and Blue chest, the Head Smash Helmet smash-attack unlock, all eight Musical Coins, and exact room-map links for Day/Night and each map variant.

Head Smash Helmet

FIRST CLEAR PRIORITY

Open the Gray Chest for the Head Smash Helmet

Carry the Gray Key to the Gray Chest and take the Head Smash Helmet. It permanently unlocks Head Smash so Wario can break ceiling blocks from below. That ability also opens W4 A Town in Chaos V2 and W1 Desert Ruins V3. Come back later for Magical Flame, Teapot, UFO, and Musical Coins as Grab Glove, Scepter, or both Sun Medallion halves unlock harder variants.

How to open The Frigid Sea

Blue Book + Magic Wand freeze the sea

Collect the Blue Book from the Red Chest in N2 The Peaceful Village and the Magic Wand from the Green Chest in S1 The Grasslands. Together they freeze a path from E1 The Stagnant Swamp to E2 The Frigid Sea.

The Stagnant Swamp itself opens after the Ornamental Fan blows away eastern mist from the Tower of Revival path. Once E2 is available, prioritize the Gray Chest Head Smash Helmet before chasing Magical Flame for Castle of Illusions.

When The Frigid Sea layout changes

E2 has four progression variants on both Day and Night. Variant 1 is available as soon as the frozen path opens. Later variants open after you collect specific treasures elsewhere:

Variant Requirements Notes Map
V1 None (sea already frozen open) Default visit. Grab Head Smash Helmet, Teapot, and UFO routes here. Open Day map
V2 Grab Glove (S4 Steep Canyon Gray Chest) Grab power opens more revisit routes inside E2. Open Day map
V3 Scepter (S5 Cave of Flames Gray Chest) Best state for Magical Flame Green Chest map indexes. Open Day map

Castle tip: Magical Flame from E2 V3 pairs with the Lantern from The Big Bridge Blue Chest. Together they reveal E3 Castle of Illusions beyond The Stagnant Swamp—the next major eastern gate after Head Smash.

VISIT ROUTE

What to do in The Frigid Sea when it first opens

1

Gray Key → Head Smash

Hunt the Gray Key, open the Gray Chest, leave the level, and confirm Head Smash works on ceiling blocks. Then push Town in Chaos V2 or Desert Ruins V3 if you need those routes.

2

Easy chests + coins

Grab Teapot and UFO when open, plus any Musical Coins on the main ice path. Skip sealed routes until Grab Glove or Scepter arrives.

3

Revisit on V3 for Magical Flame

Return with the Scepter for Magical Flame, finish remaining coins, and pair the flame with the Lantern to reveal Castle of Illusions.

FAQ

The Frigid Sea FAQ

How do you open The Frigid Sea in Wario Land 3?

Collect the Blue Book from N2 The Peaceful Village Red Chest and the Magic Wand from S1 The Grasslands Green Chest. Together they freeze a path from The Stagnant Swamp to E2 The Frigid Sea.

How do you get the Head Smash Helmet / smash attack?

Open the Gray (Grey) Chest in The Frigid Sea. On the default Day map the Gray Key and Gray Chest share rooms 0, 16, 18, 20, and 26. Head Smash lets Wario break overhead blocks by jumping into them from below.

What does Head Smash unlock on the overworld?

Besides the ability itself, Head Smash Helmet unlocks A Town in Chaos map variant 2 and Desert Ruins map variant 3. Use those revisits when chest or coin routes in those levels are still sealed.

Why can’t I reach the Green Chest Magical Flame yet?

Magical Flame indexes best on Day V3 after you collect the Scepter from Cave of Flames Gray Chest. Grab Head Smash first, open later layouts elsewhere, then return to E2 with V3 active.

What does the Magical Flame do?

It pairs with the Lantern from The Big Bridge Blue Chest. Together they reveal Castle of Illusions beyond The Stagnant Swamp—the next major eastern progression gate.

How many Musical Coins are in The Frigid Sea?

Eight—the same as every other level. Use the coin table above or the full Musical Coins Finder if you are missing one for 100% side goals.

Does The Frigid Sea have a boss?

No named boss arena is tied to The Frigid Sea. The level’s main progression value is the Head Smash Helmet ability and Magical Flame for Castle of Illusions.

Is it Gray Chest or Grey Chest?

Both spellings refer to the same chest. This guide uses Gray in player-facing text and also matches grey in search.
