The Steep Canyon (S4) opens after the Trident and Yellow Book call lightning over the canyon from The Big Bridge. Use the finder below for every Gray, Red, Green, and Blue chest plus all eight Musical Coins—with exact room-map links for Day/Night and each map variant. First priority is the Gray Chest Grab Glove, the permanent grab-and-throw ability.
FIRST CLEAR PRIORITY
Open the Gray Chest for the Grab Glove, then take Red Tusk when the route is open
Carry the Gray Key in the room 0 / 17 / 20 / 21 family to the Gray Chest in the same family and take the Grab Glove. On the same visit path, grab the Red Red Tusk when rooms 14 / 25 are open—it is one of three volcano pieces. Leave Telephone and Blue Chemical for clean-up if those routes are still gated by later map variants.

How The Steep Canyon fits the mid-game path
Unlock S4
Clear N4 Gray Chest for the Trident and N5 Gray Chest for the Yellow Book. Together they call lightning and open The Steep Canyon from The Big Bridge.
Grab Glove first
Take Grab Glove for permanent grab-and-throw. It also feeds Big Bridge V3, Frigid Sea V2, and Tidal Coast V2 on later revisits.
Eruption + clean-up
Add Red Tusk to Blue Tusk (W2) and Green Flower (E1) for the volcano eruption. Return for Telephone, Blue Chemical, Musical Coins, and the golf door.
MAP VARIANTS · DAY & NIGHT
When The Steep Canyon layout changes
S4 has four progression variants on both Day and Night. Variant 1 is available once the lightning event opens the level. Later variants open after you collect specific treasures elsewhere:

| V3 | Prince Frog's Gloves (N1 Out of the Woods Green Chest) | Frog Gloves current layout for mid/late revisits. | Open Day map |
| V4 | Rust Spray (E3 Castle of Illusions Blue Chest) | Late-game canyon layout for remaining 100% routes. | Open Day map |
FIRST VISIT ROUTE
What to do in The Steep Canyon on the first clear
Enter from The Big Bridge
After Trident + Yellow Book open the canyon lightning path, enter S4 from The Big Bridge. Lead Overalls and Swim Flippers already help if you have them.
Gray Key → Grab Glove
Hunt the Gray Key and Gray Chest in the room 0 / 17 / 20 / 21 family, leave with Grab Glove, and start throwing light enemies and objects.
Tusk, then revisit
Grab Red Tusk in rooms 14 / 25 when open. Return later for Telephone (key 10 → chest 24), Blue Chemical (rooms 7 / 16), Musical Coins, and the golf door.
FAQ
The Steep Canyon FAQ
How do you unlock The Steep Canyon?
Collect the Trident from the Gray Chest in N4 Bank of the Wild River and the Yellow Book from the Gray Chest in N5 The Tidal Coast. Together they call lightning over the canyon and open S4 from The Big Bridge.
How do I open the Gray / Grey Chest in The Steep Canyon?
Find the matching Gray Key in the room family that includes rooms 0, 17, 20, and 21, carry it to the Gray Chest in the same family, and open it for the Grab Glove.
What does the Grab Glove do?
It permanently lets Wario grab and throw light enemies and portable objects. It also unlocks Variant 3 of The Big Bridge, Variant 2 of The Frigid Sea, and Variant 2 of The Tidal Coast.
What does the Red Tusk do?
It is one of three volcano pieces. Pair it with Blue Tusk from W2 The Volcano's Base and Green Flower from E1 The Stagnant Swamp to trigger the eruption that opens W6 The West Crater and connects The Frigid Sea to The Colossal Hole.
What does the Blue Chemical do?
Together with Red Chemical from W5 Beneath the Waves, it unlocks Variant 4 of Beneath the Waves and Variant 4 of The Vast Plain for late 100% layout routes.

It is a Perfect-completion treasure from the Green Chest (key room 10, chest room 24). It is not required for the five Music Box main ending.

Eight—the same as every other level. Use the coin table above or the full Musical Coins Finder if you are missing one for 100% side goals.
