How inheritance works

Route 34 overworld map near the Day Care

Deposit a compatible pair at the Route 34 Day Care. The mother normally sets the Egg species; with Ditto, the non-Ditto parent does. The move donor can pass listed egg moves and compatible TM/HM moves. An ordinary level-up move is inherited only when both parents know it.

  • Egg move lists sit on the base form that can hatch (e.g. Totodile, not Feraligatr).
  • Ditto itself passes no moves, but a male or genderless non-Ditto partner can still be the move donor.
  • Teach the donor—and, for an ordinary level-up move, both parents—the move before depositing. Day Care leveling can make Pokémon forget moves.
  • After hatching, evolve as usual; egg moves stay on the moveset if not overwritten.
  • Pair this tool with the Hidden Power and shiny DV guides for competitive eggs.

Practical Gen 2 breeding notes

Choose the donor

In a normal male/female pair, the father supplies listed egg moves and compatible TM/HM moves. Ditto never donates moves itself, but its male or genderless non-Ditto partner can. Ordinary level-up moves are a separate case: both parents must know the move.

TM move donors

Many “egg moves” overlap with TMs. A valid donor that knows a compatible TM/HM move can pass it even when it is not on the egg list—check the Moves archive for TM/HM compatibility.

Trade evolutions

Egg moves on Scyther, Onix, Seadra, etc. stay after Metal Coat / Dragon Scale / King’s Rock trades—see the trade evolution guide.

FAQ

Egg moves questions

How do egg moves work in Pokémon Gold and Silver?

Mother normally determines species; with Ditto, the non-Ditto parent does. A valid donor can pass listed egg moves and compatible TM/HM moves. An ordinary level-up move requires both parents to know it. Use Route 34 Day Care, then hatch the Egg in your party.

How many egg moves are there in Gen 2?

Original Gold and Silver include 115 distinct egg moves across 106 base forms. Open any result in the Moves archive for full learners and TM overlap.

Can Ditto pass egg moves?

Ditto itself passes no moves. Its compatible male or genderless non-Ditto partner can still supply listed egg moves and compatible TM/HM moves. Because Ditto does not know the partner’s level-up move, it cannot satisfy the “both parents know it” rule for ordinary level-up inheritance.

Does this apply to HeartGold / SoulSilver?

No. This page is for original GBC Gold and Silver. Remakes add tutors, different availability, and some different pools—do not mix the two when planning a cart run.

Where do I find parent Pokémon?

Open any species in the detail panel, then use Pokédex location links, the wild encounter finder, fishing guide, or NPC trade checklist depending on how that mon enters the game.
