Original GBC · Not HeartGold / SoulSilver

All 6 in-game NPC trades

Original Pokemon Gold and Silver ship with exactly six one-time NPC exchanges. No second cartridge is required. Each trade locks a fixed nickname, OT, OT ID, held berry, and DV set, while the received mon keeps the level of the Pokémon you give. Use this page as a location checklist tied to the live Trade Planner, maps, Pokédex, and Whitney / dex guides.

Fast answer

Give X → get nicknamed Y

Talk to the NPC, select the requested species from your party, and confirm. You permanently lose the mon you give. The new mon arrives at the same level, with a locked nickname, fixed DVs, a held berry, and a scripted OT ID—stats are recomputed for the new species.

Priority picks: Mike’s Machop Muscle before Whitney; Kim’s Aerodactyl Aeroy for a living dex (only in-game Aerodactyl source on G/S).

How the trade engine works

Level, DVs, gender, and what does not evolve

Level inheritance

The received Pokémon keeps the level of the mon you trade away. A Lv.12 Drowzee yields a Lv.12 Muscle; a high-level Chansey yields a high-level Aeroy.

Fixed identity fields

Nickname, OT name, OT ID, held berry, and DV spreads come from the NPC—not from the mon you give. Stats recalculate for the new species at that level.

Gender lock (Emy only)

Emy is the only NPC who requires a female Dragonair. A male is rejected with the “wrong mon” dialogue. The other five NPCs accept either gender.

No communication evolutions

NPC trades never evolve Kadabra, Machoke, Graveler, Haunter, or held-item lines (Scizor, Steelix, Kingdra, Slowking, Politoed, Porygon2). Use a second cart via the Trade Planner.

Tips

Avoid soft regrets

Clone or box first

If the mon you give is a favorite, deposit a spare. NPC trades are permanent—there is no undo on cartridge.

Level for the job

Raise the giveaway to the level you want the received mon to start at. Muscle at Lv.18–20 is a Whitney-ready gift.

Nicknames stick

Muscle, Rocky, Volty, Don, Runny, and Aeroy keep their OT from the NPC, so the Name Rater will not rename them. Plan around those nicknames.

Dex before release

Open the Pokédex after each trade so the received form is registered even if you later box or release it.

FAQ

Common NPC trade questions

Is Aerodactyl available without trading Chansey?

Not on original Gold/Silver overworld content. There is no Old Amber revival path. Kim’s Route 14 trade is the designed in-game source; otherwise import from Gen I via the Time Capsule.

Can I get Machamp from Mike’s Machop?

Not through Mike. Muscle is a normal Machop. Evolving to Machamp still needs a link trade with another cartridge after it becomes Machoke.

Are these trades different in Crystal?

Crystal reuses the same six NPC trade slots and species pairs. This page targets original Gold/Silver maps and site tools; Crystal players can still use the species table but should verify house layouts in Crystal resources.

Do Gold and Silver change any NPC trade?

No. The six trades, nicknames, DVs, items, and OT IDs are shared. Version exclusives only matter for other wild mon—not these NPC tables.

Where do I track multi-cart exclusives?

Use the Trade Planner exclusives and legacy tabs, plus the Time Capsule guide.
