Gold and Silver have seven field HMs. Put them on dual multi-learners so your attackers keep four battle moves. This page is an interactive finder of every mon that learns two or more HMs, with badge gates, sample packages, and a party assigner. Original Game Boy Color only—not HeartGold/SoulSilver.

Two mons cover almost everything
Farfetch’d (Cut + Fly, Routes 38–39) + Psyduck / Golduck (Surf, Strength, Flash, Whirlpool, Waterfall—surf Ilex Forest) is a complete no-trade package. Early game: evolve Sentret → Furret for Cut + Surf + Strength before Farfetch’d. Unlike Yellow, you can delete HMs at the Move Deleter in Blackthorn once you arrive.

Totodile starter tax
Starter carries most water field work.

Cut + Fly · Farfetch’d
- Only common early dual for Cut and Fly without burning a starter.
- Available after the Olivine / Route 38 road—stock Ultra Balls; catch rate is low.
- Weak in battle; pure utility after Fly unlocks is fine.
Five-HM water · Psyduck line
- Psyduck and Golduck learn Surf, Strength, Flash, Whirlpool, and Waterfall.
- Best pure “field pack” for Johto without Time Capsule imports.
- Surf Ilex Forest after you have outdoor Surf (Fog Badge).
Early triple · Furret
- Sentret is available on Route 29 at the very start of the game.
- Furret holds three HMs while you wait for Farfetch’d and Fly.
- Great temporary slave—delete HMs later in Blackthorn if you want the slot free.

Common HM slave questions

| Is this the same as Yellow? | No. Gen 2 adds Whirlpool and Waterfall, and the Blackthorn Move Deleter can forget HMs. Yellow HMs are permanent. |
| Does Totodile learn Waterfall? | In original Gold/Silver, the Totodile line learns Cut, Surf, Strength, and Whirlpool—not Waterfall. Pair with Psyduck or Gyarados for Waterfall. |
| Best single mon for most HMs? | Psyduck/Golduck learn five field HMs (all except Cut and Fly). Farfetch’d covers those two. Dragonite later learns five but is a late evolution investment. |
