Late Johto · Original GBC Gold / Silver
Victory Road guide
Clear the eight-badge gate, follow the cave’s ladders and ledges, pocket TM26 Earthquake, beat Rival Silver (Lv.34–38), and walk out onto Route 23 for the Indigo Plateau. Original Gold/Silver Victory Road has no Strength boulder puzzle. This is original Game Boy Color Gold & Silver—not HeartGold/SoulSilver—with live pins into the map, walkthrough, rival guide, Elite Four prep, and item tools.
Fast answer
Badges → ladders → Silver → Indigo
After Clair and the Rising Badge, leave New Bark east: Surf / Waterfall through Tohjo Falls, train on Route 27 and Route 26, pass the eight-badge check at Victory Road Gate, then enter the cave.
Inside: follow the ladders and ledges—Strength is not required—collect TM26 Earthquake at tile (3, 28), heal with Max Revive / Full Restore / Full Heal, defeat Silver near the top, exit north to Route 23, and heal at the Indigo Plateau Center before the Elite Four.
How to get there
New Bark → Tohjo → Routes 27–26 → gate
1. Requirements
- All 8 Johto badges (Rising Badge from Clair last).
- HM03 Surf + Fog Badge, and HM07 Waterfall + Rising Badge for outdoor Waterfall at Tohjo Falls.
- No field HM is required inside Victory Road. Strength is optional and does not open any cave path.
- Party around Lv.34–40 before Silver and the League.
2. Travel path
- From New Bark, Surf east into the water corridor.
- Climb Tohjo Falls with outdoor Waterfall (Rising Badge).
- Clear trainers on Route 27 and Route 26.
- Pass the badge inspector at Victory Road Gate, then enter the cave north.
3. Prep before the cave
- Heal and stock Full Restores / Revives at any Center before the long cave.
- Keep battle moves intact; you do not need to teach Strength for this cave.
- Optional: grab leftover TMs and finish endgame team coverage before Silver.
Inside the cave
Ladder, corridor & ledge climb
How the map works
- Original G/S use one tall Victory Road map (not multi-floor Gen 1 style).
- Internal warps (ladder holes) connect lower and upper segments—use them to climb.
- South entrance: from Victory Road Gate. North exit: tile warp to Route 23.
- Escape Rope / Dig can return you to the entrance if you need to heal or restock.
No boulder puzzle
- There are no pushable Strength rocks in original Gold/Silver Victory Road.
- Progress comes from choosing the correct ladders and walking around the cave’s walls and ledges.
- No object placement can soft-lock the route.
- Do not import the boulder-maze memory from other generations or the remakes.
Recommended climb order
- Enter from the south gate, clear early corridors.
- Scoop lower items (Max Revive, Full Heal near mid tiles).
- Use the next ladder and loop through the mid-height corridors.
- Grab TM26 and recovery items on the upper shelves.
- Heal, then step into Silver’s trigger tiles before the north exit.

| Full Restore | Visible ball | (18, 29) | Map pin |
| Full Heal | Visible ball | (15, 48) | Map pin |

Item positions match original GBC Gold/Silver map scripts. Remakes (HGSS) use different Victory Road layouts—do not mix tile guides.
Wild encounters
Cave grass table · Gold vs Silver
Encounter rate 6% morning / day / night. Time-of-day slots are identical within each version; only the version exclusive changes.
Boss fight
Rival Silver · Victory Road
Silver ambushes you near the north exit on tiles (12, 8) or (13, 8). Levels 34–38; ace is his fully evolved starter at Lv.38. Pick your starter below to load the matching branch.
Threat notes
- Sneasel — Dark/Ice pressure; weak to Fighting / Fire / Rock / Bug.
- Haunter / Kadabra — Special walls; Dark and priority help.
- Magneton — Ground and Fire cut through Steel/Electric.
- Starter ace — Type advantage from your own starter line still helps.
After the battle
- Silver leaves; the scene flag clears so he does not re-block the path.
- Exit north to Route 23, then the Indigo Plateau Pokémon Center.
- Heal fully before Will → Koga → Bruno → Karen → Lance.
