Pokemon Yellow type chart (Gen 1)

Yellow runs the original 15-type Generation I chart—not modern Sword/Shield or Scarlet/Violet matchups. Use the dual-type calculator and full matrix below. Multipliers match English Pokemon Yellow and the same Gen 1 table used by the damage calculator and moves tools.

Fast answer

Why Yellow needs its own chart

If you learned types from Let’s Go, modern games, or even later gens, a few Yellow matchups will surprise you. Ghost moves do not damage Psychic, Bug and Poison beat each other, and there is no Dark type to check Alakazam. This page is the Yellow-accurate chart for planning gyms, Elite Four, and team cores—then jump to the damage calculator for exact rolls.

Physical vs Special by type

Physical types

Use Attack vs Defense. Critical hits still scale with Speed in Yellow.

Special types

Use the single Special stat for both offense and defense. Badge boosts and X Special matter a lot.

STAB still applies

Same-type attack bonus is 1.5× in Yellow and multiplies after type effectiveness—see the damage calculator for integer order.

Status ignores the chart

Thunder Wave, Sleep Powder, and similar status moves do not use this damage chart (with separate immunities like Ground vs Thunder Wave).

Fixed-damage moves

Seismic Toss, Night Shade, Dragon Rage, and Sonic Boom use fixed or level-based damage and ignore type multipliers when they hit.

Chart tips for Yellow gyms

Early gyms

  • Brock — Rock/Ground: Water and Grass smash Onix; Electric is immune on Ground.
  • Misty — Water: Grass and Electric; avoid Fire and Rock-weak leads.
  • Lt. Surge — Electric: Ground is free; Flying takes SE Electric.

Mid to late

  • Erika — Grass/Poison walls: Fire, Ice, Psychic, Flying; Bug is SE on Poison in Gen 1.
  • Koga — Poison: Ground and Psychic; Bug also SE in Yellow.
  • Sabrina — Psychic: Bug is your friend; Ghost fails to damage Psychic.
  • Blaine — Fire: Water, Rock, Ground; Ice is only neutral.
  • Giovanni — Ground: Water, Grass, Ice.

FAQ

Type chart questions

Is this chart different from Red and Blue?

Type effectiveness is the same across English Gen 1 carts. Yellow still uses this chart; what changes are available Pokemon, gym teams, and story gifts—not the multipliers themselves.

Does Ghost hit Psychic in Pokemon Yellow?

No. Ghost damaging moves deal 0× to Psychic. Night Shade can still work because it deals fixed damage when it connects.

Why does Beedrill feel strong into Poison types?

In Gen 1, Bug is super effective against Poison (and Poison is super effective against Bug). That mutual SE is removed in later generations.

Where do I check STAB and random rolls?

Use the damage calculator for Gen 1 integer order, STAB, crits, and 217–255 variance. Pair with this chart for the type product.

Can I plan coverage for a whole team?

Yes—load candidates in the Team Planner and cross-check bosses under Gyms and Trainers.
